Do you know what stretching can do for your body? Maya Angelou famously said, “When you know better, you do better.” But do we?

Stretching is often one of those things we forget about because we’re not sure exactly what to do and don’t want to hurt ourselves. But when you’re stretched by an expert, you really will “do better” at just about everything. You’ll find those experts at StretchLab Hudson.

“Now is a perfect time of year to get started,” says StretchLab Hudson general manager Kim Newhouse. “When temperatures drop, muscles and connective tissues can feel less pliable and joints might feel stiff or achy, especially first thing in the morning or after sitting for a while. A gradual warm-up, followed by a stretch, can help prepare the body for movement.”

And there’s nothing quite like a one-on-one assisted stretch by a StretchLab Flexologist to take all the guesswork out of stretching. Flexologists are trained experts in stretching, with a background in a related field like exercise science, kinesiology, yoga or personal training. They complete a three-tiered certification process including extensive online coursework, in-person workshops, and 20-plus practice hours administering StretchLab’s signature 26 stretches.

“This is not a ‘one-stretch-fits-all’ stretching session,” says Kim. “This is your stretch, designed by a Flexologist, personalized to your needs, limitations and goals. And in Northeast Ohio, fall and winter often include the limitations of spending more time indoors, more sitting and fewer opportunities for outdoor activity.”

Kim adds that a regular stretching routine is an easy way to break up sedentary periods and keep the body moving through a comfortable range of motion.

“Everyone experiences the stress, strain and hectic schedules of the fast-approaching holiday season,” says Kim. “Adding stretching to your routine provides a natural pause in a busy, hectic day. Slow, controlled movement paired with steady breathing can encourage you to focus on the present moment, step away from screens, work and other distractions.”

Kim points out that throughout your assisted stretch, you are in complete control and remain comfortable. Your Flexologist is always communicating with you and pushing you beyond what you can do alone but within your limits. Just relax and enjoy the stretch.

“Consistent stretching can support range of motion, which becomes particularly important as we age. It can also complement walking, strength training, recreational activities and everyday movements such as bending, reaching and getting up from a chair,” says Kim. “But stretching is not just for those already struggling with flexibility and mobility. Stretching supports healthy movement in young adults, even kids, and helps maintain flexibility for sports and other activities.”

For adults who are on the phone or sitting at a desk all day and still want to remain active in these increasingly sedentary months in Northeast Ohio, assisted stretching can help you with that, too.

“Fall is a great time to start stretching before the hectic holiday season kicks into high gear,” says Kim “As the temperature drops, you don’t want to let your movement routine hibernate. A consistent combination of stretching and regular physical activity can help you stay mobile, break up sedentary time and make movement more comfortable throughout the colder months.”

The holiday season starts now. With Halloween upon us, it’s an action-packed few months ahead. Start stretching now with the experts at StretchLab, stay consistent, and you’ll be ready for whatever the season brings.
