Putting homeowners first

Key to the Spartan StormShield business model is putting the homeowner first. Here’s how that commitment made a difference to Akron homeowner Dr. Mike Pavlak.

When Dr. Mike Pavlak and his wife bought their stately Akron Beautification Award-winning home in 2020, “new roof” was one of the many positive mechanicals that attracted them. Not long after moving in, they noticed groundwater in the basement.

“At first I chalked it up to being an older home, built in the 1940s,” he says. However, not long after that he noticed water coming in through his son’s bedroom ceiling. “Every time it rained, I’d scramble to strategically place buckets to catch the incoming water,” he says. “Emptying them regularly was not a long-term solution. It was a nightmare.”

He called the company that originally installed the roof to come take a look. They told him, sure, but you’ll have to pay a service fee.

“That didn’t sit right with me,” says Mike. “It was a red flag. I don’t want to work with a company that won’t stand by its work.”

Putting the Homeowner First

Mike reached out to Spartan StormShield.

“Jack Thompson came out and spent a lot of time up on the roof,” he says. “He wanted to try to repair what he could to save us from buying a new one. It gave me confidence that he put our best interest first and wasn’t just trying to sell me a new roof system. Then the company CEO Jarod Arlia came out to inspect the roof. I kept waiting for an invoice that never came.”

Unfortunately, failure in a relatively new roof is not uncommon.

According to Jarod, “We routinely replace roofs that are only five to 10 years old. The problem is that most companies focus on just replacing shingles, they don’t go beyond that. And since most leaks aren’t a function of shingles failing, they are a function of the marriage points between shingles and other surfaces like siding, gutters and chimneys—those companies’ warranties don’t cover such leaks.”

After troubleshooting and patchwork didn’t resolve the issues, and it was determined that Mike’s roof was not repairable and a new one was needed, the team at Spartan StormShield educated him about his choices.

“I don’t speak their professional language, so they made everything understandable to me,” he says. “They invited me up on the ladder to show me what was going on. I learned a lot about my roof and was making informed decisions. That was empowering.”

Education is critical to the roofing specialists at Spartan StormShield.

“If a homeowner is better educated, they will understand that a cheap bid to replace shingles isn’t actually what they were looking for,” says Jarod.

Meticulous Workmanship, Lifetime Promise

Mike says the lifetime warranty from Spartan StormShield—not just on materials, but also on craftsmanship—made a difference in how confident he was in hiring Spartan StormShield.

“Also, the crews meticulously cleaned the job site when they were done,” he says. “I didn’t have to worry about my 2-year-old finding a nail.”

At the end of the day, not all roofs are created equal. No matter how old your roof is, the team recommends homeowners have theirs inspected every five years. Staying ahead of problems can protect your roof in the long-term and save money.

Spartan StormShield lives up to its reputation for installing “the roof system to last your lifetime.” It installs and repairs roofs for homes and businesses all over Northeast Ohio.
