A vision comes full circle

Eyes on Dover Eyecare & Optical Boutique incorporates a fascinating history with modern eyecare convenience.

If you’re a fan of full-circle stories, you’re going to love this one.

Growing up, Chelsea Des Rosiers loved to visit her grandfather Dr. Bill Bennett’s dental practice, which was in a charming 1863 home on Dover Center Road in Westlake.

After graduating from Magnificat High School, then Cleveland State University, she earned her doctorate in optometry in 2021. In addition to working in a private practice, she’s spent time working in the research lab, garnering numerous awards and publications. When it came time to start her own private practice, she wanted to follow in her grandfather’s footsteps.

“I appreciated how the private practice model lets the doctor spend as much time as needed to treat the patient,” she says. “I plan to operate with personalized care, much like he did.”

The home he practiced in sat vacant for a decade and needed a lot of work. Dr. Des Rosiers took it down to the studs, reimagined the layout, and rebuilt with intention. The name she chose—Eyes on Dover Eyecare & Optical Boutique—is a nod to the street the home overlooks, as well as the original township that became Westlake.

“I love the West Side of Cleveland and I love history,” she says. “That’s why I wanted the iconic Guardians of Traffic statue likeness depicted in my logo, to honor our sense of place.”

Latest Tech, Sophisticated Styles

During her third year of optometry school, Dr. Des Rosiers made a mission trip to Guatemala that played a pivotal role in her specialty of pediatric care.

“I find it rewarding to work with younger patients, setting them up for a lifetime of healthy vision,” she says, noting the American Optometric Association recommends children get their first eye exam at 6 months. “Younger patients today are spending so much of their time looking at screens, it’s having a negative impact on their vision. We’re seeing a rise in myopia. It's important to watch for progression closely and implement myopia control.”

One of the next-level pieces of imaging equipment she has invested in is the Optomap, which provides a precise digital image of the eye. Patients no longer have to worry about having their eyes dilated.

“I recommend patients have an eye exam annually, no matter their age,” she says. “A lot of systemic diseases like diabetes and high blood pressure show up in the eyes first.”

When it comes to selection, she has gone all out, taking every budget into consideration. You’ll find a range of affordable styles to ultra-exclusive, high-end brands like Ørgreen from Denmark that are very lightweight with an understated European look, as well as Etnia Barcelona that sport a unique Spanish flair. She also offers several contact lens manufacturers and specialty lenses.

Feels Like Home

Dr. Des Rosiers opted to give the home a fresh new feel. Sunlight splashes on a palette of creams and pale greens, blonde wood floors, an eclectic mix of art deco light fixtures, white leather furniture and warm gold accents.

As a nod to the past, she retained rustic elements like fine woodwork around the original wood-burning fireplace and exposed red brick.

She also made sure to inject some whimsy, designing a cheeky black-and-white tile treatment in front of the fireplace, depicting a pair of glasses.

“I wanted a look that was modern and sophisticated, yet grounded and welcoming,” she says. “I didn’t want it to feel clinical like a medical practice.”

Dr. Chelsea Des Rosiers accepts most major insurances and vision plans.
