Time to reset and realign at Brecksville’s new StretchLab

Maintaining a regular stretching routine helps the body feel more prepared for the unexpected physical demands of winter. Here’s how StretchLab in Brecksville can help.

Brecksville is growing, developing and ... stretching? There’s a brand- new StretchLab in Brecksville, and a good stretch is just what we all need—especially during the winter. In these frigid months, our physical activity levels wane and we tend to want to curl up on the couch and wait it out. But it’s important to prioritize strategies to keep muscles and joints strong and flexible. That way, when the weather breaks, we’re ready to get moving without pain, stiffness or injury.

StretchLab offers one-on-one assisted stretching guided by trained experts called Flexologists. They provide a stretch that can’t be achieved alone. Two of the biggest reasons people hesitate to stretch is because they’re not sure what to do and they don’t want to hurt themselves. At StretchLab, you won’t just learn the proper way to stretch, they’ll do it for you.

“The benefits of consistent stretching allow us to do just about everything better, and longer,” Area Manager Jenna Head says. “Winter in Northeast Ohio brings with it a more sedentary lifestyle that affects both body and mind. A hands-on assisted stretch will unlock the joints, lengthen and strengthen tight muscles and improve the mental state. Clients leave feeling strong and refreshed.”

Before you arrive for your first stretch session, a Flexologist reaches out about your goals, lifestyle, past injuries and other information. StretchLab Flexologists have backgrounds in health and fitness. They complete an extensive, three-tiered certification process that includes 60 hours of in-person workshops and 20-plus hours of hands-on training administering the 26 signature StretchLab stretches designed to address every muscle group in the body.

Flexologists use a stretching technique called proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation (PNF), which uses resistance to target the body’s tissues and ligaments and improve muscle elasticity. You are never in pain and are always in control of your stretch.

“That’s the best part about what we do,” Jenna says. “We are your partners and talk you through every stretch, explaining what we’re doing and welcoming your feedback.”

Your initial 50-minute stretch begins with a simple MAPS assessment determining mobility, activation, posture and symmetry. Flexologists identify your specific issues, allowing them to work on the right muscle groups while you get the most out of your sessions. Periodic repeats of the MAPS test track progress as flexibility increases, pain lessens and new goals are set.

Everyone’s goals at StretchLab are unique. Working with clients of all ages, some are competing at their sport at a high level and want to gain flexibility and strength, others want to improve a golf swing, scoop balls on the pickleball court or maintain their independence as they age.

Many StretchLab clients have past injuries that have caused nagging pain for years, or lower back, hip and neck pain from spending hours every day sitting or standing at work. When they want to do something more active, they have pain or flexibility issues. Your Flexologist will identify what’s holding you back and, with consistent stretching, improve your performance.

“Our muscles need to be cared for, and we can’t do it alone,” Jenna says. “It’s particularly easy to become stiff and inflexible in the winter. Assisted stretching is an important self-care tool that will keep you active, flexible and pain-free, leading to better physical and mental health.”
