Preventative skin cancer screenings
From now until the end of April, anyone can receive a preventative skin cancer screening at Trillium Creek Dermatology. All you have to do is pick up the phone and call or schedule online.

With approximately 9,500 people diagnosed each day, skin cancer is the most common form of cancer. But it can be successfully treated if detected early. It usually starts small. A freckle that darkens. A spot that won’t heal. A mole that’s slowly getting larger. While these subtleties can seem harmless, they can also be early warning signs of skin cancer—the most common cancer in the U.S., with one in five Americans developing it in their lifetime.
Skin cancer screenings are one of the simplest, most effective ways to catch potential problems early—before they become dangerous or life-threatening.
Throughout the year, Trillium Creek Dermatology promotes preventative skin cancer screenings across the community.
“Our mission as a practice is to consistently and confidently serve the outstanding community members around us,” says Dr. Selena Pasadyn, who sees patients in the Brunswick and Strongsville offices. “Offering these preventative skin cancer screenings is one of the many ways we care for those in our hometown.”
Now through April, preventative skin cancer screenings are available at all five Trillium Creek Dermatology locations in Brunswick, Strongsville, Medina, Wadsworth and Wooster.
“We do a full body skin exam from head to toe,” Dr. Pasadyn explains. “The most common skin cancers we see are basal cell carcinoma, which often appears waxy or pearly and occurs on sun-exposed areas; squamous cell carcinoma, which is typically red and scaly; and melanoma, which originates in pigment-producing cells.”
Early detection is especially critical for melanoma, which can metastasize and become deadly if left untreated.
“We think of skin cancer prevention as a partnership,” Dr. Pasadyn says. “You check your skin regularly and report anything new or changing. We provide the expert knowledge and trained eye and use a specialized dermatoscope light to examine pigment networks and skin lesions to ensure nothing dangerous slips by unnoticed.”
While skin cancer is the most common form of cancer, with approximately 9,500 people diagnosed each day, it can be successfully treated if detected early.
“If you notice a mole that is changing in size or shape, or if you have a rash, scaly or itchy skin, or anything else you are concerned about, schedule an appointment with one of our dermatology providers for a baseline screening to establish care and have a touchpoint for anything that comes up in the future,” Dr. Pasadyn suggests.
Because mole colors vary widely from tan, brown, black, gray, pink, red, or even white, watching for changes is key.
Dr. Pasadyn recommends following the ABCDE rule when checking moles:
- Asymmetry: One half doesn’t match the other
- Border: Edges are irregular or blurred
- Color: Multiple shades or uneven color
- Diameter: Larger than a pencil eraser (6 mm)
- Evolving: Any change in size, shape, color or sensation.
Skin Cancer Prevention
At Trillium Creek Dermatology, patient education is a cornerstone of care. That begins with teaching patients how to lessen their risk of getting skin cancer.
“Regular sunscreen use significantly reduces your skin cancer risk,” Dr. Pasadyn notes. “I recommend patients apply sunscreen with an SPF 30 or higher, or wear sun protective clothing when outdoors. Look for broad spectrum sunscreens with ingredients such as zinc oxide, iron oxide and titanium dioxide.”
She also emphasizes the importance of sun protection for children, as statistics show having five or more sunburns doubles your risk for melanoma. “Severe sunburns during childhood increase the risk of skin cancer later in life, so early prevention matters,” she says.
Comprehensive Care, Close to Home
In addition to skin cancer screenings and treatment, Dr. Pasadyn provides comprehensive dermatologic care for conditions such as eczema, rosacea, psoriasis and acne, as well as hair loss and nail disorders.
A hometown product who attended Brunswick High School, she is excited to give back to the community that helped shape who she is today.
“I competed in cross country, track and swimming in high school,” Dr. Pasadyn says. “So, I was and remain immersed in the community.”
Dr. Pasadyn also competed in cross country and track while at Harvard University, where she earned a Bachelor of Arts in Human Developmental and Regenerative Biology and a secondary in Global Health and Health Policy.
After her undergraduate education, she attended medical school at the Cleveland Clinic Lerner College of Medicine and continued her dermatology internship and residency at the Cleveland Clinic.

Preventative Skin Cancer Screening
Trillium Creek Dermatology is offering preventative skin cancer screenings starting Sunday, February 1, through Thursday, April 30, to help people stay proactive about their skin health. During the screening, the team of trained dermatology experts will perform a comprehensive exam, carefully checking for any unusual moles, spots or lesions that may require further attention. If any areas of concern are identified during the exam, a follow-up visit will be scheduled.
