Insurance covers hearing aids for kids

Ohio joins 25 other states that require insurance companies to cover hearing aids for kids.

Madeline’s Law shows Ohio’s commitment to supporting children with hearing loss.

In 2023, Ohio made a big step forward in helping children with hearing loss by passing “Madeline’s Law.” This important law makes health insurance companies pay for hearing aids for children under 22 years old. The law became official when it was included in House Bill 315 and signed by Governor Mike DeWine in late 2024.

Ohio joins 25 other states that require insurance companies to cover hearing aids for kids. The law provides “one hearing aid per ear, up to $2,500 every 48 months” and covers services like fittings and follow-up appointments with licensed audiologists. Before this law, hearing aids were often considered “cosmetic” and not covered by insurance, which meant families had to pay high costs on their own.

“Madeline’s Law shows Ohio’s commitment to supporting children with hearing loss,” says Dr. Cara Donovan, Director of Pediatrics at Sounds of Life Hearing Center. “Getting hearing aids early can help children avoid learning struggles and speech delays, while also boosting their confidence and social skills.”

The Ohio Speech and Hearing Governmental Affairs Coalition played an important role in making this law happen. Sarah Curtis, Au.D., owner of Sounds of Life Hearing Center, is a member of this group and worked with others to support the law’s passage.

Sounds of Life Hearing Center provides a wide range of hearing services for children, including newborn testing, help for auditory processing issues, and support for kids using hearing aids or cochlear implants. “We work closely with families, schools and doctors to make sure children get the care they need,” explains Dr. Donovan. “Madeline’s Law will open doors for so many children to get the help they deserve.”

Sounds of Life Hearing Center is located at 8003 Auburn Road, Suite 4, Concord Township. For more information and to schedule an appointment call 440-579-4085 or visit the website SoundsOfLifeHC.com.
