A haven to call home
At Haven Home Assisted Living, smaller resident numbers mean personal attention comes standard. Here’s the difference this home is making in the lives of seniors

Have you ever had a moment when something wasn’t exactly what you expected, in a good way? That’s what happened when I walked into Haven Home Assisted Living in Mentor.
If you’ve researched assisted living communities for yourself or a loved one, you know it can be overwhelming. There are many things to consider when matching the individual with a community’s services and amenities, and most find that services are universal. It’s the intangibles that make the difference.
“We set ourselves apart by offering those intangibles,” says Haven Home Assisted Living owner Tom Damukaitis. “This is a highly personal experience along with excellent services, all at affordable rates. That’s the Haven Home difference.”
Tom and his wife Susan have owned and operated Haven Home for almost 25 years. Susan initially worked as an assistant to Haven Home’s previous owner.
“The owner eventually moved to Georgia and asked if I would like to take over managing the property,” says Susan. “Not long after, Tom left his 32-year career in banking to join me, and we purchased Haven Home outright. We’ve never looked back.”
Life at Haven Home
“On the outside it looks like a house. On the inside, it feels like home,” the couple says. That’s the feeling Susan and Tom work to maintain at Haven Home every day.
“This is a real home, not a facility,” says Susan. “Our small staff of caring and compassionate professionals provides everything from well-balanced, delicious meals, laundry services and maintenance tasks to ensuring the physical, mental and social well-being of our residents. Our goal is to offer that perfect balance between assistance and independent living.”
Amenities at Haven Home include private, semi-private and premium private rooms, a main living area with a fireplace, country kitchen and cozy community dining, outdoor socialization areas and more.
“All services are included, such as laundry, room cleaning, social and spiritual activities and special events,” says Susan. “And the best part is, you don’t have to do them anymore. Leave that to the Haven Home caregivers and volunteers.”
Caregiver to Resident Ratio
“We intentionally keep our caregiver-to-resident ratio very low at 1:7,” says Tom. “It’s more like 1:20-25 at other communities. This allows us to offer personalized support, creating an atmosphere where residents and caregivers interact like a family.”
Tom says that when he began researching the industry as a new owner at Haven Home, he quickly realized that when a community went over 14 residents, it began to feel “institutional.”
“We’ll never allow that,” says Tom. “We do have a few two-person occupancy rooms. Haven Home was originally built as an assisted living community, so we cater to the needs of our residents in every way.”
Compassionate Caregiving
Tom and Susan say that each Haven Home caregiver is a “jack-of-all-trades.”
As a family-owned and operated community, Tom and Susan answer to only their residents and their families.
“Most assisted living communities are corporate owned and have separate staff for cooking, laundry, maintenance and caregiving,” says Susan. “Some of these people never see residents. Our caregivers do it all, allowing them to form caring relationships, get to know likes and dislikes and interact with families.”
The average experience level of Haven Home caregivers is more than 13 years.
“We know that what we’re doing is best for our residents and their families based on their feedback,” says Susan. “They often remark on the care and kindness of the staff, professional and friendly atmosphere, personalized care and the staff’s respect and concern for residents. We’ve created something very special for our residents—a home.”
