Chippewa Stone—the family-owned success story

By treating customers like family, Chippewa Stone has found success in helping clients navigate countless options to create stunning results.

Modern kitchen with dark wood cabinets, a large marble island, stainless steel appliances, and wood floors.

The countertops and the full-height backsplash in this kitchen are the work of the family-owned Chippewa Stone. With a “waterfall” countertop on the center island flowing to the floor and counter-to-cabinet stone backsplashes, the on-trend kitchen checks all the boxes for in-demand design.

Like many successful entrepreneurs, Oskar and Courtney Gruber started their business in their garage. Back then, their company was called Home Quarters Improvements. Together, the couple poured their energy into home remodeling, specializing in kitchens and bathrooms—the spaces where families gather and memories are made. Oskar took charge of the production side, earning a reputation for quality craftsmanship, while Courtney became the trusted guide for clients, known for her organization, communication and genuine care.

If that all sounds like a prelude to a reality TV show, let us just say the couple was always a bit ahead of their time … right down to creating a beautiful family with five children.

“While raising our children we were also growing our business,” Courtney says. “In 2006, we were blessed with the opportunity to move into a much larger facility, the one we still occupy today. We only had a handful of employees, but we were growing quickly.”

“The extra space couldn’t have come at a better time,” Oskar continues, finishing Courtney’s thought as couples who are perfectly in sync often do. “We started by renting around 10 thousand square feet, which felt huge at the time, to buying the building 10 years ago and now occupy over 50,000 thousand square feet of space. Moving here was one of the key opportunities that led to our growth.”

Becoming Chippewa Stone

Soon, another opportunity arose for the couple, one that required leaving their comfort zone of remodeling. Courtney recalls questioning their decision to pursue a new business direction. “One of our local builders suggested that we become a dedicated stone provider,” she says. “We knew from being in remodeling that our area needed a reliable source for natural and manufactured stone products fabricated with quality and in a timely manner—and we knew we could do that. But by handling only the stone and not designing the entire remodeling project, I thought we would be lost. But it worked. Little did I know how often our customers would rely on our team’s ability to make colors and patterns work for their tastes and in surprising ways—when the sometimes unimaginable variety of options becomes a work of art.”

Courtney marvels, looking back over the years at the thousands of jobs they’ve completed and all the people who’ve become like family to the Grubers. “We’ve installed projects all over Ohio, as well as in New York, Pennsylvania, West Virginia and Kentucky,” she says. “We even provided stone tops for a large project in Florida. Today, we’re proud to have generational customers. Children of past customers, as well as other family members, have put their trust in us.”

After a Chippewa Stone customer chooses their perfect new countertop, the company’s involvement isn’t over.

“Once our sales team finalizes the selection process, the order is given to our production department,” Oskar explains. “That’s when the magic happens. We schedule a visit to the client’s home to take exact measurements so the finished stone will fit their project precisely. Our craftsmen cut the stone to highlight the natural ‘flow’ of your stone’s pattern whenever possible.”

Beyond Countertops

These days, Chippewa fabricates a variety of stone applications beyond standard countertops. “Think of a magnificent stone for mantels that completely define a room, surfaces for wet bars, outdoor barbecue areas or laundry room folding tables, and many other options,” Oskar explains. “For the ultimate in luxury-made-affordable, we can install a stone-paneled walk-in shower, a ‘waterfall’ countertop on a kitchen island, or counter end panels.”

The company’s designers and fabricators enjoy working with customers to produce exceptional results that will last for generations.

“Our showroom has a wonderful selection of examples designed to inspire the imagination,” Oskar says. “And we are yet again in the process of expanding our vignettes and look forward to sharing the results with everyone.”
