A hefty body of statistical data shows that most people begin to experience a physiological and metabolic slowdown around age 70. The American Heart Association reports a “non-linear decline in aerobic capacity with a drop of more than 20% per decade after 70.” And according to the National Institutes of Health, muscle mass and strength decrease by 12 to 14% per decade after 50.
With a successful career in the insurance industry, 70-year-old Mike Cremeans is adept at dealing with numbers and statistics. He’s also highly skilled at analyzing and strategizing to make the numbers work for you. Not only is he not slowing down, he’s also committed to being in the best shape of his life.
Targeted and Efficient
“I had worked with trainer Christian Lupia for years and when he told me about the slow-resistance equipment at MaxStrength Fitness, I was intrigued,” says Mike, who also works out at a local boxing gym and trained in martial arts. “This intense level of resistance training, with real science behind it, is targeted and incredibly efficient.”
He still works full-time and is busy with his wife, four daughters and five grandchildren, so the twice-a-week, 20-minute-session protocol fits perfectly with his hectic schedule.
“I’m not just in excellent shape physically now, but mentally, too,” he adds. “I’m more in tune with how my body responds to exercise and nutrition. The mind-body connection is stronger than ever.”

Equally impactful is the studio environment. “It’s incredibly welcoming,” he says. “From the moment you walk in, you feel supported. The trainers genuinely care about your progress.”
Mike has no plans to slow down.
“Statistics may say I have a certain number of years left,” he says with a laugh. “I don’t believe that. I hope you’ll be interviewing me again when I’m 90. I’ve got much more life to live, more places to go, and more grandchildren to meet.”
What’s Your Algorithm?
MSF Founder Jeff Tomaszewski publishes a motivational e-newsletter for members filled with science-backed content and ideas to elevate the training experience.
This month he explores how your brain runs on an algorithm much like your social media feed. Anyone who has watched a cute cat video and then sees their feed turn into a cat circus can relate that you are shown what you pay attention to.
“Your own internal ‘algorithm’ responds directly to your environment and the things you repeatedly see, do and interact with,” says Jeff. “If your environment supports your healthy goals—walking shoes waiting by the door, healthy snacks in the fridge—your brain begins reinforcing those habits automatically. Oftentimes one simple shift is enough to create momentum. Small changes can make a big difference.”
