Stop Losing Money Through Old Windows

Mimi Vanderhaven • August 13, 2026

Winter is on its way. Here’s how Empire Window Company can help you save on heating costs and enjoy a more comfortable home.

A stack of books sits on a wooden table, next to a lit candle and a warm cup of coffee or tea.

Empire Window Company offers today’s most technologically advanced windows so you and your family can enjoy a quieter, more comfortable home—and save on utility bills.

That rumbling you’re hearing each morning outside your home’s aging windows isn’t a snowplow, not yet. It’s a yellow school bus carrying kids back to school, but the rumbling snowplow isn’t far behind.

Fall is here, which means it’s time to prepare your home for winter, and the number one way to reduce your heating bills and increase your home’s comfort is to install new replacement windows.

“Drafty windows using yesterday’s glass technology are among the biggest causes of heat loss in winter,” explains Empire Window Company owner Bill Gartner. “Home heating costs are forecast to rise by nearly 10% this winter. That means now is the best time to have your new windows installed.”

New Window Technology

Unlike the windows of yesterday, today’s products are high-tech engineering marvels. “Windows are 80% glass, so it’s important to choose the right glass for Northeast Ohio’s harsh climate,” Bill says. “Our windows feature multi-layered Low-E glass with argon gas between the panes and our Warm-Edge Spacer System. These windows have been proven to be far more energy-efficient than those with ordinary glass systems.”

Bill adds that this same technology that saves on heating bills in winter also conserves air conditioning in summer.

Noise Reduction/Easy Maintenance

One of the benefits of Empire Window Company’s windows goes beyond energy savings and comfort: reduced noise.

“Many of our customers are surprised to discover how much quieter their home is after installation,” Bill says. “Outside noise is something we just kind of get used to, so the difference can be dramatic, especially if your windows are very old. Customers tell us that their dogs no longer bark at every little noise outside at night.”

Another advantage is easy maintenance. Some of Empire’s windows fold in effortlessly for easy cleaning. “You don’t have to get on a ladder or stand in your flowerbed to clean your windows,” Bill says. “Nor do you have to spend big money on professional cleaning. It’s so easy to do it yourself.”

Professional Installation

Starting with a quality window is just part of the window replacement process. Proper installation is also essential.

“Installing a window is more complex than many people think,” Bill explains. “Our installation teams are pros, and they don’t take shortcuts. Some companies order undersized windows to make them easier to install, then fill the gaps with massive amounts of foam or caulk. Not only is this less energy-efficient, but you’re not getting the full glass area you paid for.”

Other installation problems caused by less professional companies include neglecting to properly prep the opening, including checking for mold and rotten wood; failing to make the window plumb and square; improper flashing and water treatment; and applying too much expanding foam, which can bow or distort a new vinyl window.

“We’ve been in business for almost 70 years,” Bill says. “You can trust that these are mistakes we just don’t make.”
