World-class kidney care

UH Ahuja Medical Center launches the innovative Stone Clinic for rapid diagnosis, treatment and prevention of kidney stones.

By bringing together a team of world-class experts in a single location, University Hospitals’ Stone Clinic is effectively ending the “waiting game” that often defines kidney stone treatment.

With the launch of a first-of-its-kind Stone Clinic at the Cutler Center for Men at UH Ahuja Medical Center, University Hospitals has reached a major milestone in specialized care. This innovative clinic is the first in the region to offer a fully integrated, one-stop destination specifically designed to deliver rapid, coordinated care for those suffering from the agonizing pain of kidney stones.

By bringing together a team of world-class experts in a single location, the clinic is effectively ending the “waiting game” that often defines kidney stone treatment. Rather than navigating separate appointments across different weeks, patients now have a direct pathway to diagnosis, immediate treatment, and long-term prevention.

“Kidney stone patients are often in severe pain and need to be seen quickly,” says Dr. Jose Salvado, Chief of the Division of Stone Disease at University Hospitals. “Until now, there was no clear pathway for immediate care, which often left patients with no choice but the emergency room. Our new Stone Clinic changes that by providing rapid access to expert treatment and prevention—all in one place.”

A Personalized, 360-Degree Approach

The clinic’s unique model is built around the “shared visit” concept. On Wednesday afternoons, patients can experience a comprehensive, 90-minute session where they meet sequentially with three different specialists: a urologist, a nephrologist, and a registered dietitian.

This team doesn’t just treat the stone; it looks at the “big picture” of a patient’s health to prevent future episodes. Since nearly 86% of kidney stones are influenced by diet, having a nutritionist involved from day one is a vital part of the healing process.

“We are reimagining specialty care around the patient,” says Dr. Lee Ponsky, Chair of the Department of Urology at University Hospitals. “By combining urology, kidney expertise, and nutrition into one coordinated hub, we are ensuring that our neighbors get faster access to relief and a much better overall experience.”

World-Class Setting

Located on the third floor of the state-of-the-art Drusinsky Sports Medicine Institute, the clinic offers the latest in non-invasive and minimally invasive treatments, including shockwave therapy and laser technology. Whether a stone is a recurring issue or a sudden emergency, the goal is to help patients return to the rhythm of their lives as quickly as possible.
