Walking together

Here’s an opportunity to show support for those who have been affected by cancer.

Stewart’s Caring Place offers about 150 different programs throughout the year. Whether you are newly diagnosed, caring for a loved one or grieving a loss, the programs and services are available at no cost.

When Mimi Surloff founded Stewart’s Caring Place in 2003 to honor her late husband Stewart, she never imagined how far its impact would reach. Today, the cancer wellness center serves thousands of individuals and families across more than 30 Ohio counties, offering all services at no cost to those affected by cancer.

“Throughout his cancer journey, Stewart always said he wished for a place where everyone could go that was warm, welcoming and non-medical—where they truly felt supported,” Mimi recalls. “That vision is still at the heart of everything we do.”

After outgrowing its early locations, Stewart’s Caring Place moved into a purpose-built center in Fairlawn in 2020. In 2024, the nonprofit further expanded by merging with Aunt Susie’s Cancer Wellness Center in Canton, creating two locations operating under the same mission: to provide holistic, compassionate care to individuals and families navigating the challenges of cancer.

Designed to feel calming yet uplifting, both wellness centers offer support groups, group fitness and yoga classes, holistic care and wigs and other beauty services.

“We are fully funded by the generosity of this community,” President & CEO Sarah Voktek says. “We rely on donations from individuals and organizations to continue serving all those touched by cancer.”

Take Advantage of Ongoing Services

At Stewart’s Caring Place, the services and programs range from a wig room with free wigs and scarves and an organic garden and demonstration kitchen where guests can learn to cook nutritional meals to kids’ summer camps, a healing arts suite offering reiki and massage, art and music programs, and even fly-fishing classes at an on-site pond.

All-encompassing services also include specialized support groups, financial and legal consultations, and a food pantry for anyone who is facing food insecurities.

“We offer about 150 different programs throughout the year,” says Sarah. “Whether you are newly diagnosed, caring for a loved one or grieving a loss, our programs and services are available at no cost.”

Make Plans to Attend Special Events

First on the calendar is the Spring Art Show “Flutter,” which opens to the public Friday, March 20, and runs through May at the Fairlawn location. Inspired by the butterfly in the organization’s logo, the exhibit celebrates the strength, hope and healing found through art.

“We have seen firsthand the power of art to inspire and heal,” Sarah says.

Artwork from local artists fills the hallways year-round, creating a vibrant, welcoming environment.

“We never want this to feel like a hospital,” Mimi adds. “We want our wellness center to be colorful and cheerful.”

Throughout the year, Stewart’s Caring Place hosts events that bring the community together while raising funds to support its no-cost programs.

The annual Hope Walk celebrates its 20th anniversary in 2026, taking place on Saturday, May 2. Step out in support of individuals and families impacted by cancer while raising funds for Stewart’s Caring Place. Participants can walk individually, form teams or even join virtually, choosing between locations in Fairlawn and Canton, with more than 400 walkers typically raising around $40,000 each year to fund free support services. The event is about more than fundraising—it’s a powerful show of hope, remembrance and unity, reminding those on the cancer journey that they are never alone.

The signature Butterfly Gala takes place Saturday, August 29, under an elegantly decorated tent at the home of a supporter and features dinner, live and silent auctions, and live entertainment.

Later in the fall, Pasta for a Purpose on Saturday, November 7, offers a family-friendly event where delicious food meets a meaningful cause.

Stewart’s Caring Place provides a caring, relaxed environment to those of all ages touched by any phase or stage of cancer. It offers supportive programs and services at no cost for everyone.

20-Year Anniversary of the Hope Walk

Step out in support of those facing cancer during the Hope Walk, happening Saturday, May 2, from 9 a.m.- 12 p.m. noon. This meaningful community event will benefit Stewart’s Caring Place. Every step helps to raise funds while spreading a powerful message that no one must face cancer alone.

“The Hope Walk is bigger than just raising money,” says Dietra Goggins, chair of the Hope Walk. “It’s about providing hope and support for those on the journey and remembering those who fought a good fight.”

“It is awesome when the community comes together for a great cause,” she adds. “When those affected by cancer see all the smiling faces and support, it reminds them they are not alone. It’s like a big group hug.”

Participants can walk individually or form a team, furry friends included. Walkers can choose from two locations: Stewart’s Caring Place in Fairlawn, featuring a 2-mile loop and family-friendly activities, or Sippo Lake Park in Canton, where walkers enjoy scenic trails.

“You also can also participate virtually in your neighborhood or wherever you like,” says Sarah Vojtek, president & CEO of Stewart’s Caring Place. “We’ve had families walk on the beach during their vacation or join from different states to show their support. On average, we have more than 400 walkers and raise approximately $40,000 every year.”

Following the walk at the Fairlawn wellness center, participants can enjoy ice cream, slushies and refreshments along with DJ entertainment, exhibitor displays and a ceremonial finish-line oar arch formed by the Dragon Dream Team.

The event is sponsored by Mimi Surloff and family, along with other generous businesses. Proceeds help provide support services at no cost to individuals and families navigating the cancer journey.

“We want to uplift those who are fighting cancer and the survivors,” Dietra says. “For those who are feeling fear and exhaustion, both physical and mental, Stewart’s Caring Place is here for them.”
