With more than 135 medical specialties and subspecialties, it’s hard to know whom to call when you have medical issues. For those suffering from leg pain, consulting with a vascular specialist can bring relief, especially to those whose pain is accompanied by swelling, redness or poor blood circulation.
“We focus on all things legs and how to keep your legs healthy,” says Dr. Barry Zadeh, who has built a growing regional network of vein and vascular centers, including the newly opened Ohio Vein and Vascular – Mentor and other centers in Medina, Canton, Avon, Independence, Norwalk and Mansfield. “During our free leg screening, we evaluate all leg pain and primarily treat vascular disease, but if we find orthopedic, neurological or other medical problems, we can refer patients to proper care.”
“Leg pain is not only annoying but can also indicate a more serious health issue,” Dr. Michael Levy says. “About a third of the population has venous disease and about half of those would benefit from medical intervention. And though vein and vascular problems skew to the elderly, I have also treated teenagers, so it really can affect anyone.”
Take, for example, Thresea, a Shelby resident who used to walk 9 miles a day but had to stop due to the pain. It got so bad she could not even climb her stairs without taking a break. That’s when she sought out a specialist and scheduled a leg screening with Dr. Zadeh, who diagnosed her with peripheral artery disease (PAD), in which the arteries narrow and cause cramping, pain and tiredness in the legs or hip muscles.
“I was in my 40s, so I thought I was too young to have artery problems,” Thresea says. “Now after the procedure, I feel like I have my life back. I have no more pain and no longer take pain meds.”
Pioneering Artery Treatments
One of the most common diseases is PAD—the result of narrowing or blockage caused by the buildup of fatty plaque in the vessels in the legs or lower extremities that carry blood from the heart to the legs.
“If you have pain while walking, specifically in the calf, thigh or buttocks muscles, that is a symptom that you may have blockage in the arteries in your leg,” Dr. Zadeh says.
Pioneering a novel method, Dr. Zadeh offers the Zero Contrast Pedal Approach to his patients. Working through an artery in the foot, instead of the traditional groin access point, he uses balloons, stents or atherectomy devices to open blockages.
“We also are starting to do a radial approach, where we access affected arteries in the lower extremities through the radial artery in the wrist,” he says. “This has always been a preferred approach cardiologists use for heart catheterization, but now vascular surgeons are using it as a pioneering approach to treat PAD.”
Minimally Invasive Procedures
If you are among those suffering from leg pain or swelling caused by vein reflux disease, varicose veins, valve insufficiencies or ulcers of the extremities, Ohio Vein and Vascular – Mentor can bring you relief though minimally invasive procedures, in which tiny catheters are used to treat damaged veins.
The physicians offer a full range of veinous interventions, from thermal ablations to mechanical-chemical ablations to microfoam ablations, which close damaged veins and reroute blood to healthy veins nearby.
Full Spectrum of Care
“We offer the best care for all things related to your legs, from minor superficial cosmetic issues to severe leg and foot ulcers common in diabetics,” Dr. Zadeh says. “We also perform endovascular procedures, including treatment of deep vein thrombosis, treatment of abdominal and peripheral aneurysms, dialysis access repair, and venous intervention and stenting.”
Ohio Vein and Vascular – Mentor is equipped with high-tech equipment, so the majority of procedures can be done in the office without requiring a trip to the hospital.
“With our in-office cath lab, we can do most procedures in the comfort of our office, making it more convenient for our patients,” he says.
