When I was younger, I would wonder why so many seniors liked to eat at 5:00, enjoying many an early bird special. But now that I’m a senior myself, I get it.

I like to eat early and go to bed after Jeopardy! This allows me rise early (generally 5:30 to 6:00) and enjoy the quiet of the morning while still getting nine hours of sleep, not counting the three times I must get up to go to the bathroom.

Well, now there’s a whole new reason to rise early. It’s the Senior Specials menu at Sunrise Social. It’s available from 6:30 to 9:00 a.m. and features some sweet deals, including a cage-free egg prepared your way, your choice of bacon, Canadian bacon, maple sausage patty or sausage link, plus home fries and toast—all for $8.99. That includes a complimentary gourmet coffee from Akron Coffee Roasters.

Sunrise Social co-owners Lisa Houck (left) and Jeannie Hopkins insist on a full scratch kitchen where their house-made, high-quality food begins with high-quality ingredients, locally sourced whenever possible.

“We usually get busy around 9 o’clock in the morning, but we’re less busy when we first open at 6:30. That’s why we’re encouraging seniors over age 65 to join us for sunrise with our Senior Specials menu,” says co-owner Jeannie Hopkins, who owns the brunch hot spot in Green along with restaurateur Lisa Houck, who also co-owns Lala’s in the Lakes in the Portage Lakes area, and Wink’s Drive-in in Barberton.

You’ll find the complete Senior Specials menu in the sidebar accompanying this story.

Gourmet Breakfast, Brunch, Lunch
If you’re not a senior or an early riser, that’s okay. Sunrise Social is an ideal spot for breakfast, brunch or lunch any time before 2 p.m. It’s an especially popular spot for business breakfasts or lunches.

“We’re a scratch kitchen and we’re obsessed with quality,” Lisa says. “We’re about high-quality food made from high-quality ingredients. Everything is fresh. Nothing is frozen.”

The pair slow-roast their own corned beef and make all sauces in-house, including a classic French hollandaise using fresh egg yolks, real butter, white wine, and lime juice. They even insist on using real Vermont maple syrup.

You’ll also find vegetarian and vegan options, like the Vegan Bowl, which is chickpea succotash over quinoa, topped with arugula pesto. Feel free to add vegan sausage.

The Menu
Sunrise Social is renowned for popular brunch favorites like Shrimp & Grits, Chicken & Waffles, and Eggs Benedict, which Jeannie and Lisa dub “Eggs Benny.” But the menu goes much deeper than these classics. Let’s have a look:

The Sunrise Ultimate BLT features six pieces of thick-sliced bacon, lettuce, tomato, and fresh-baked, no-preservatives bread. You can also add egg or cheese.

There are lots of other available sandwiches, including the Ultimate Corned Beef, which is house-made corned beef piled on sourdough then topped with Swiss cheese, pepper jam, cream cheese, and kimchi. All hand-helds come with your choice of a side salad, fruit salad, home fries, French fries, or kale chips.

The Stone-Ground Cheesy Grits are baked stone-ground grits, white cheddar and cotija cheese, topped with two sunny-side-up, cage-free eggs, served with bacon and toast.

Craving something a bit heavier? Check out the Hangover Bowl. It’s sausage and spaetzle in a Havarti cream sauce, served over potatoes. You can add a cage-free egg on top, too.

The Mimosa Flight features your choice of four styles from a selection of eight—blackberry, blueberry, watermelon, strawberry, peach, pineapple, and lychee.

If a little hair of the dog is called for—or just a fun, refreshing way to enjoy a vacation-style brunch—Sunrise Social features a wide selection of spirits, including bloody Marys and margarita and mimosa flights.

And forget diner-style coffee. Sunrise Social serves gourmet specialty coffees—lattes, espressos, cappuccinos, macchiatos, and more—from beans by Akron Coffee Roasters. And if you buy special a Sunrise Social coffee cup, you get a free refill.

Get It to Go
If you’re too busy to make it to the restaurant, that’s okay. Simply order takeout and enjoy a delicious business lunch right in your own office.
