Skin cancer prevention

Although skin cancer is one of the most prevalent types of cancer to affect Americans, there are simple ways to stop it in its tracks.

At Trillium Creek Dermatology, the physicians and physician assistants perform skin cancer exams to detect early-stage cancers. One out of five Americans will develop skin cancer by age 70.

When Dr. Selena Pasadyn crossed the finish line in second place at the Cleveland Marathon two years ago, it’s what happened next that truly made a bigger impact in her life.

Her dad, a registered nurse who was there to cheer her on, witnessed another runner collapse and immediately jumped in to perform CPR, saving the person’s life.

“It’s a moment like this that reaffirms why I chose a career in health care,” says Dr. Pasadyn, who is joining the staff at Trillium Creek Dermatology, serving patients in the Brunswick and Strongsville offices.

A hometown girl who was born in Hinckley and attended Brunswick High School, she is excited to give back to the community that helped shaped who she is today.

“I spent a lot of time in the Brunswick library and rec center, and I competed in cross country, track and swimming in high school,” Dr. Pasadyn says. “I credit the Brunswick community for a lot of my personal, educational and professional success and am so grateful for the community that surrounded me growing up.”

Dr. Pasadyn also competed in cross country and track while at Harvard University, where she earned a Bachelor of Arts in Human Developmental and Regenerative Biology and a secondary in Global Health and Health Policy.

After her undergraduate education, she attended medical school at the Cleveland Clinic Lerner College of Medicine. Following medical school, Dr. Pasadyn continued her dermatology internship and residency at the Cleveland Clinic.

As a dermatologist, Dr. Pasadyn treats skin conditions, such as eczema, rosacea, psoriasis, acne and cutaneous infections, as well as hair loss and nail disorders.

“I am also abreast in more complex dermatology, such as adverse cutaneous reactions to chemotherapy and complex autoimmune diseases, and I work in conjunction with rheumatologists and oncologists for the best outcomes,” she says.

Skin Cancer Prevention

At Trillium Creek Dermatology, the physicians and physician assistants perform skin cancer exams to detect early-stage cancers—when they are the most treatable—and educate patients on how to prevent skin cancer from developing in the first place.

“I recommend that all my patients apply sunscreen with an SPF 30 or higher, or wear protective sunwear when outdoors,” Dr. Pasadyn notes. “It is especially important that parents make sure their kids are protected, as it has been shown that severe sunburns during the childhood years can cause issues later in life.”

Skin cancer is the most common form of cancer in the United States, with one in five Americans diagnosed in their lifetime and approximately 9,500 new cases each day.

“The good news is it is also the most preventable and can be successfully treated if detected early through annual skin cancer exams,” Dr. Pasadyn says. “So, if you notice a mole that is changing in size or shape, or if you have a rash, scaly or itchy skin, or anything else you are concerned about, schedule an appointment with a dermatologist for a baseline screening to establish care and have a touchpoint for anything that comes up in the future.”

Family Owned, Individually Focused

From adult and pediatric dermatology to specialized Mohs surgery to cosmetic treatments, Trillium Creek Dermatology is an all-encompassing dermatology practice. With five locations in Wooster, Wadsworth, Medina, Brunswick and Strongsville, the medical practice serves almost 100,000 patients a year.

Dr. Helen Torok founded HMT Dermatology in 1978 and then renamed it Trillium Creek Dermatology after moving the practice from Smith Road to Wooster Pike in 2003 on a 20-acre Medina property that was speckled with trilliums and a creek running through the middle.

“As a community-centered dermatology practice, we offer more personalized care,” she says. “We have had a footprint in the community for over 40 years and are committed to the community and the patients living here. As a family-owned business, which is not owned by a private equity group or big hospital, we are focused on our patients’ well-being and offering cost-effective treatments.”

Trillium Creek Dermatology has five locations: 2865 Center Road, Suite 5, in Brunswick; 5783 Wooster Pike in Medina; 300 Weatherstone Drive, Suite 106, in Wadsworth; 128 E. Milltown Road, Suite 208, in Wooster; and 17982 Royalton Road in Strongsville. Call 330-725-0569 for an appointment or visit TrilliumCreekOhio.com
