The edge

Unique Live Edge Tables creates one-of-a-kind pieces that give any environment a natural, elevated edge.

A stack of books sits on a wooden table, next to a lit candle and a warm cup of coffee or tea.

When we cut a log, what’s on the inside is always a surprise. I’ve had hits and misses over the years, but I’ve gotten very good at looking at a tree trunk and predicting its character and variations on the inside. I have a lot more hits than misses these days.

Do your home furniture goals include any of the following: a natural aesthetic, sustainability, durability, customization, value and unmatched beauty? If so, live-edge furniture checks every box. At Unique Live Edge Tables in Chesterland, John Fisher guides customers through the process of creating furniture from the raw wood slab of their choice. They end up with a one-of-a-kind piece made specifically for them.

“Growing up in a logging family, making this our career and learning every aspect of the business over the years have all led me and my brother Marvin to where we are now,” John says. “Logging has taught us so much about different woods and the beauty they each hold. We wanted to do something creative that exposes and preserves that natural beauty, so we started making furniture in 2019.”

As finely skilled Amish craftsmen, John and Marvin focus on the customization of each piece. Whether it’s walnut, maple, hickory, cherry or a rare variety of wood, each piece of wood holds differences that make it truly unique.

“That’s what we love about live edge,” says John. “When we cut a log, what’s on the inside is always a surprise. I’ve had hits and misses over the years, but I’ve gotten very good at looking at a tree trunk and predicting its character and variations on the inside. I have a lot more hits than misses these days.”

Make a visit to Unique Live Edge Tables in Chesterland and you’ll see John’s latest hits lining the walls. There is even some quilted redwood John is particularly excited about.

“Quilted redwood is very rare and sourced from trees that may be thousands of years old,” says John. “It’s usually a deep reddish wood known for its intense and vast amount of variation in the grain. These grains almost look like bubbles, giving the look of a quilt pattern.”

John says quilted redwood is often used for higher-end applications, like live-edge furniture and even guitar tops.

“This is the stuff that really excites us,” says John. “The way a customer chooses to finish the wood just adds to the uniqueness of the finished product. You can use the same slab and end up with completely different looks depending on the stain and finish.”

From tables to bar tops, chairs and more, at Unique Live Edge, each piece is custom from start to finish, creating a generational treasure. And durability is built right in.

“These trees have been around for hundreds, sometimes thousands of years,” says John. “We’re continuing that legacy with every piece of wood—preserving its history for generations to come.”

No matter the style of your home, the beauty of live-edge fits right in. Traditional, rustic, modern, eclectic, even industrial, live edge furnishings are a versatile choice to add warmth and a natural aesthetic to any space.

“We can make a piece look rustic by leaving some bark on an edge or some of the holes in the wood open,” says John. “Or we can fill those gaps with epoxy in any color you choose and soften the edges for a sleeker, more modern look. Your piece, your choice.”

Creating your live edge furniture piece from start to finish allows you to stay within your budget with options at every price point. From small side tables or bar tops to 12-foot conference tables, work with John to create something unique and beautiful for your home.
