With the hottest brands and appliance styles, including the wildly popular flat-top griddle, summer is sizzling at Stewart’s TV & Appliance.

The close-knit family that runs Stewart’s TV & Appliance is gearing up to celebrate its 80th anniversary next year. Though technology has advanced at warp speed, with appliances that are smarter and more efficient than ever, the Stewarts have stuck with the values their father Dick held dear when he founded the operation.

What began as a small corner store on Cleveland Street in Elyria, just west of Abbe Road, has grown into a sprawling two-story super showroom with galleries featuring every imaginable appliance, from ovens and stoves to refrigerators, washers, dryers and grills.

“We love it when customers come in and say their parents and grandparents were loyal customers who sent them here,” says current president Ed Stewart, Dick’s son. His sister Nancy is vice president and runs the service side of the business, and his sister Pam handles marketing and advertising. His son Kevin is working through the ranks of service and sales positions to one day take over Ed’s job leading the company.

The Personal Difference

“Over the years people have come to appreciate the personal difference of shopping from a family-owned business versus a big-box store,” says Ed. “Our long-term sales team is extremely knowledgeable about each product’s features and benefits. Educating shoppers is where we shine. We don’t want to just sell them an appliance; we want to sell them appliances throughout their lives. We also have a greater selection than big- box stores and are priced competitively.”

He says lots of customers are searching for independent retailers, and when it comes to appliance stores, there aren’t many left.

With the uncertainty of tariffs looming on the horizon, Ed says many of their customers are buying their appliances now even if they haven’t finalized plans for a renovation.

“Luckily, almost everything we carry is made in the United States,” he says. “However, some parts for appliances only come from overseas, which may cause difficulty and a price increase going forward.”

What to Get Dad

With last-minute Father’s Day shopping and summer cookouts on everyone’s docket, one of the hottest trends in grilling, the flat-top griddle, is perfect for grill masters.

Ed reports that since Weber and Blackstone Products have recently merged, consumers can expect a wider selection of these high-quality products.

“Crafted from slate and treated with an anti-rust coating, a griddle allows an expanded cooking surface, up to 36 inches,” says Ed. “People love to cook everything from smash burgers to eggs and pancakes, even stir-fries. With edge-to-edge heat up to 500 degrees, everything cooks better on the griddle. We also sell just the topper to convert an existing grill.”

In addition to grills, with the hot, wet summer forecasted, people are loading up on air conditioning units and humidifiers.

What’s Trending in Appliances?

“Induction cooktops have really gone mainstream,” says Ed. “Perfect for people who prefer gas over electric, they promise faster cooking times and improved safety. Another feature customers ask for is having an air fryer as part of their oven.”

When it comes to refrigerators, popular styles feature a drawer or compartment people can switch from fridge to freezer space as needed.

“And cooks love the Kitchen Aid Smart Oven, which comes with accessories that include a grill, steamer and baking stone,” he says. “With the boom in gardening, we’re also selling more freezers so people can preserve their produce.”

Stewart’s TV & Appliance is located at 468 Cleveland Street in Elyria, just a half-mile west of Abbe Road. Delivery of appliances is free. They also offer haul away of your previous freestanding appliances for a reasonable fee. Stewart’s is currently hiring for all positions. Enjoy good pay and opportunity for advancement. Stewart Family Archive Recipe

This family is known for throwing All-American cookouts on the Fourth. One staple at every gathering is grilled corn on the cob.

Nancy Stewart says the secret to this moist, flavorful side is leaving the corn in the husk, where it gently steams during grilling. The charred husks leave behind a bold, smoky flavor.

Grilled Corn on the Cob

Ingredients

  • Corn cobs
  • Water for soaking
  • Butter

Trim the silks off the end of each cob. Soak cobs in cold water for up to an hour. Lay them directly on a high heat grill and cook for 15 minutes while rotating frequently. Shuck and enjoy. The Stewart family prefers classic butter as a topper, but if you’re feeling fancy, try Mexican street corn (blend mayonnaise, sour cream, cotija, chili powder and cilantro served with lime wedges) or take a Southern spin with BBQ corn topped with barbecue sauce and crushed potato chips.
