Sounds of Life Hearing Center gives tips to help loved ones.

If background noise is too loud, try continuing the conversation in a quieter spot or ask the host about lowering the volume.

The holidays are about bringing loved ones closer together, sharing special moments and making memories. But for those with hearing loss, navigating holiday gatherings can be difficult and overwhelming. Dr. Sarah Curtis, audiologist and founder of Sounds of Life Hearing Center, offers communication strategies to help structure festive celebrations and improve conversations for people with hearing challenges.

“There are so many things that can be done to set someone up for success, making their holiday more fun and more memorable,” says Dr. Curtis.

For example, if someone is struggling to hear, it helps if they can see the other person’s facial expressions. Speech-reading relies on visual cues, so providing sufficient lighting creates opportunities for people trying to pick up on those signals. Slowing down your speech and stating the topic when someone joins a conversation midstream also gives them context clues to follow.

If background noise is too loud, try continuing the conversation in a quieter spot or ask the host about lowering the volume. Consider seating someone with hearing issues at the head of the table so they don’t have to talk or listen through other people.

And don’t feel bad if they want to leave early. They may be experiencing auditory fatigue and simply need a break. Offer grace, and try to do the most important parts of the evening first.

Lastly, if someone notices they’re having a harder time hearing than others, it may be time to schedule a hearing test. Dr. Curtis and her team are available not only for the holidays, but year-round, helping people find strategies that lead to the best possible hearing experience.
