Having the conversation

So, what’s the best way to introduce the idea of home care to your loved one?

Lead the conversation with compassion and empathy so your loved one understands your intentions are coming from a place of love and concern.

The adult child/elderly parent relationship can be challenging when the topic of home care is introduced.

The staff at Gardens of Western Reserve Home Care & Hospice is dedicated to in-home care and hospice services. Owners Rich Piekarski and Hanna Schindley have combined experience of more than 60 years in senior care and hospice. With Rich’s son Richie joining the team, they continue their dedication to in-home care because they see every day how it offers the best overall outcomes for families.

So, what’s the best way to introduce the idea to your loved one?

“Starting this conversation can be sensitive and challenging,” Hanna says. “We are available 24/7 to answer questions, whether you use our services or not.” Here are a few tips to get you started.

  • Choose the right time and place. Be sure your loved one feels safe and relaxed.
  • Involve other family members if possible. This shows a collective concern.
  • Lead with compassion and empathy so your loved one understands your intentions are coming from a place of love and concern.
  • Avoid declarative statements like, “You can’t take care of yourself,” or “You need help before something terrible happens.” Instead, ask questions like, “How have you been feeling lately?” or, “Are there things around the house that have become challenging?”
  • Listen. Give them the time and space to voice their thoughts and feelings.
  • Stress the quality of life, independence and comfort of remaining in their home.
  • Present the option of starting with minimal help. Gardens of Western Reserve offers service with no minimum hours.
  • Be patient, prepare for resistance and provide time to process the conversation.
