Growing up in Columbus, Georgia, almost every home I saw was built of red brick. That’s because red clay was everywhere in the Georgia soil, as were brickyard oven kilns turning that clay into low-cost bricks.

However, the first thing I noticed when I moved to Northeast Ohio in the early 1990s was a lack of brick houses. Instead, neighborhoods amounted to row after row of homes clad in plain white siding.
