Closure that honors life

Closure means honoring a life, saying goodbye in a personal and healthy way, and coming together with family and friends to support each other.

A close-up of a group of people in an affectionate embrace, sharing smiles in a warm, indoor setting.

“Ritual is the railing we hold onto,” is an adage that has application to my vocation in the planning of final services. The impact of ritual to the grieving process and closure is profound.

Our funeral home has held thousands of funerals since the 1950s. We’ve planned services that allow for meaning in a moment that might feel shocking or senseless.

Whatever the reason, families that make the decision to delay or forego a funeral are cheating themselves on a part of life’s journey. Psychologists call it “complicated grief,” which can become prolonged and more painful when someone is not able to fully process a loss.

To me, closure means honoring a life, saying goodbye in a personal and healthy way, and coming together with family and friends to support each other. It validates their life while connecting you to your unique role in it.

Studies have shown that human connection is one of the strongest protectors against prolonged grief. When we orchestrate a funeral, people appreciate the thoughtful touches we make to remember the deceased—for instance, displaying photos and creating a memorial video.

There’s often as much laughter as there are tears. Life is best celebrated with shared stories that will be passed down within the family. People become united in their solace.

Oftentimes a family member will meet someone at the service who will share a story about their loved one they have never heard before. That’s the real living, lasting tribute they can take to heart. A proper funeral is a way to say, this was a life well-lived.
