Baby’s First Hearing Test
Here’s what happened when one Mimi staffer visited Sounds of Life Hearing Center for a baseline pediatric hearing test.

Pediatric hearing evaluations at Sounds of Life Hearing Center, help support healthy speech and language development.
At my 5-month-old Charlie’s first appointment with Sounds of Life Hearing Center, I wasn’t sure what to expect. What if he was fussy during his hearing test and inconsolable during mine? What if he was scared? But my biggest fear was: What if he didn’t test well? As a new mom, it was a lot for my tired brain to process.
Right away, I was impressed by the family-friendly atmosphere. Charlie and I enjoyed playing with the sensory panel on the wall while we briefly waited for our examinations.
We met with Director of Pediatrics and Implantable Technologies Cara Donovan Au.D. and fourth-year resident Hannah DiMare. They explained the process, laying out everything they were looking for. Charlie passed his initial hearing test at the hospital, but I knew Sounds of Life could validate his progress with a more comprehensive exam, and provide support if it didn’t go the way I expected.
After assessing Charlie’s inner ears, they left us in the sound booth for the actual test. I was relieved to see Charlie delighted by following the sounds of toys in different directions and trying to find Hannah’s voice through the speakers like a game.
His results confirmed that his hearing was healthy and on track for developing speech and language skills.
I also had my hearing tested, though it wasn’t as entertaining as Charlie’s. It was quick and efficient. I listened to a series of beeps and repeated phrases at different volumes and levels of background noise.
My hearing was also healthy, and I appreciated how they detailed the results in a way I could understand and see.
All in all, our experience at Sounds of Life Hearing Center was a great one. The team is so thoughtful with everything they do. I know that if something were to change for me or Charlie, I can be confident in its unwavering support and guidance.
