Upgrade with confidence

Ryan Streb, General Manager, Streb Electric • January 12, 2026

Modernize your home’s electrical system without losing its charm. Streb Electric makes outlet placement, wiring updates and safety inspections simple.

While everyone appreciates the vintage charm of older homes, they do come with safety and operational considerations when it comes to electrical updates.

Lake County is known for its miles of Lake Erie shoreline, beaches, parks, wineries and stately homes.

While everyone appreciates the vintage charm of older homes, they do come with safety and operational considerations when it comes to electrical updates. Behind the walls, homes built before 1980 often don’t have electrical systems that can handle our ever-growing demand for electricity. They were built long before modern appliances, home offices and smart technology became commonplace.

Older homes often still have older electrical panels that rely on 60- or 100-amp service, which could lead to flickering lights, overheating and tripped breakers.

Since older homes were built following older codes, they tend to have fewer electrical outlets, which we find leads homeowners to use more extension cords and power strips. That can overload the outlets. We help assess your home’s outlet placement and usage and add them wherever they’d best serve the homeowner.

Wiring can also be a concern. Many homes built before 1950 have what’s known as knob-and-tube wiring, with porcelain knobs and tubes to support cloth-insulated wiring. Since it presents a fire risk and does not meet current safety standards, we recommend replacing it with modern wiring.

Wondering if your home is operating at peak efficiency and safety? Since your electrical system works harder in the winter, now is a good time to give us a call to schedule a Whole-House Electrical Safety Inspection. No matter how old your home is, our trained electricians can identify hidden issues, ensure your system meets current codes and recommend upgrades that make sense for your home and budget. We inspect and assess every part of your system, from the main panel to every outlet, circuit breaker and wiring.

My family has enjoyed helping local families stay safe, comfortable and energy-efficient for more than 50 years and looks forward to continuing that in the future. Happy New Year.
