The difference 3D can make

Dr. Ian Fehring-Founder, Fehring Family Dentistry • November 10, 2025

3D imaging allows for much more precise imaging of the teeth, roots, bone, nerves and soft tissues from every angle.

The bottom line: An extra dimension goes a long way to offering next-level care.

“When you change the way you look at things, the things you look at change.” —Dr. Wayne Dyer

Investing in the advanced technology of diagnostics is a mission at my practice. The more precise the images when it comes to teeth, bone and gums, the earlier I can detect issues and the better the overall treatment outcomes.

In addition to 2D x-rays, we’ve introduced 3D digital scans and 3D CBCT (Cone Beam Computed Tomography) scans. Digital scans use light to create the images and CBCT uses x-rays to achieve the highest resolution images that capture intricate details of the dental and skeletal anatomy. With in-house crown fabrication and advanced 3D scanning, we’ve reduced the need for traditional impressions.

The 3D imaging allows for much more precise imaging of the teeth, roots, bone, nerves and soft tissues from every angle. This leads to better diagnoses and treatment plans. It allows me to detect issues like hidden cavities, the status of wisdom teeth, abscesses, impacted teeth, bone loss, tiny fractures and other pathology.

These images also help me stay a few steps ahead when it comes to the best timing for dental implants, root canals, extractions and orthodontic planning. I utilize 3D digital scans to make models and help create Invisalign aligners for patients who want to correct and improve their smile and bite. I’m able to show patients what their smile looks like and what is could look like after treatment.

I’m always seeking ways to bring modern technology to my practice. It’s the kind of dentistry I’d want for my own family, and the kind I strive to deliver to my patients. The bottom line: An extra dimension goes a long way to offering next-level care.
