Smile fix

Loving your smile doesn’t have to be as labor intensive as you might think. Here’s how Dr. Ian Fehring, of Fehring Family Dentistry, is transforming smiles in less time.

Six people in matching black uniforms stand in a row in front of a brick house with autumn trees.

Dr. Ian Fehring (center), of Fehring Family Dentistry, says many of his SureSmile patients are adults ages 30-60 who may have had braces and not worn a retainer afterward, or never had braces and have issues to correct.

As young as 6 weeks old, humans are biologically predisposed to prefer happy, smiling faces. The simple act of smiling stimulates emotional, social and cognitive development, not to mention positive social bonding.

So, it’s heartbreaking that according to a survey by the American Association of Orthodontists, 36% of American adults are unhappy with their smile—and two-thirds of them experience symptoms of depression and anxiety.

Fehring Family Dentistry can almost always correct the cause of an unattractive smiles through SureSmile clear aligners, fixing spaces between teeth, crowding, crooked teeth and over- or underbites.

“Transforming smiles is such an easy fix,” says Founder Dr. Ian Fehring, who began working with aligners ten years ago. “After researching the industry, I went with SureSmile as my preferred orthodontic alternative to traditional braces because of the precise 3D digital imaging, fewer appointments needed, a shorter length of treatment time (around 6-18 months), comfort and aesthetics, since they’re nearly invisible. This treatment is usually covered under major insurances, and we advise patients about the cost during the consultation.”

About the Process

During the consultation, Dr. Fehring takes 3D images of your smile and shows you a perfect version of how it will look after treatment. He sends the images to a lab to fabricate the trays, which patients wear for two weeks at a time before changing them. Teeth and bite shift gently and gradually into the desired position. Trays are worn 23 hours a day and taken off for eating and brushing.

A nice perk of treatment is the final tray a patient wears comes with a whitening gel, so the result is a bright, white, dazzling smile.

Dr. Fehring says many of his patients are adults ages 30-60 who may have had braces and not worn a retainer afterward or never had braces and have issues to correct.

“You’re never too old to be happy with your smile,” he says. “I just finished treatment for my 70-year-old mother, and she loves her new perfect smile. She gets comments when walking through the grocery store on how pretty her teeth are.”

Dr. Fehring also offers a host of other cosmetic services to beautify your smile, including whitening, veneers, extractions, same-day crowns, gum contouring, bridges and dentures.

“Being able to transform a patient’s smile, to meet with them after treatment and show the dramatic ‘before’ photo, means the world to me,” he adds.

In-House Technology

Whatever the treatment, Dr. Fehring devotes himself to emerging technology, such as 3D imaging, which he calls a game-changer in terms of precision.

The practice also offers same-day crowns, with Dr. Fehring milling the restorations himself in-house instead of sending them out to a lab.

“I understand how valuable my patients’ time is,” he says. “I can fabricate natural-looking teeth in about two hours via one appointment instead of conventional crowns that take two appointments and several weeks wearing a temporary crown.”

Another avenue of technology he’s invested in is a soft tissue laser.

“It opens the door to offer minimally invasive procedures such as gum shaping to get rid of a gummy smile, and periodontal therapies, with faster healing,” he says.

Dr. Fehring’s level of advanced education is an ongoing mission. Additional specialties he has studied include oral surgery, pediatric dentistry, endodontics, periodontics, dental implants and prosthodontics.
