Custom sports mouthguards

Custom fit guards are significantly more effective than the generic boil-and-bite ones you’d buy at a sporting goods store.

My three school-age children are active in sports and being their biggest fan whenever they take to the field, court or gym is one of my favorite things.

Now that we are in the middle of fall sports season, it’s a good time to talk about the importance of mouthguards. These hard-working heroes protect teeth and gums and can even prevent concussions by absorbing and distributing impact forces. They should be worn at all times an athlete comes into contact with others, whether in games or practices.

This is one of life’s situations where there is a huge difference between good, better, and best quality in terms of performance and protection. Custom fit guards are significantly more effective than the generic boil-and-bite ones you’d buy at a sporting goods store. They are less bulky and more comfortable, staying snugly in place, while one-size-fits-all guards often fall out.

Parents should consider that once you sustain a serious dental injury, it stays with you the rest of your life. For instance, if a 10-year-old has his or her tooth knocked out, they cannot get an implant to correct it until they are around age 20 since the jaw is not finished growing. In the meantime, they have to wear a retainer with a false tooth, which has a social stigma and is an appliance they have to manage, and could potentially lose.

In our office, we create durable custom mouthguards from thin plastic material that is exactly molded to the athlete’s teeth and jaw, which allows for easy breathing and clear communication, especially important when your star quarterback is calling out the plays. Since we have an in-office lab, everything is created here to our exacting specifications.

Getting a custom mouthguard is a win-win to best protect your kids’ precious smiles.
