A smarter roof for a brighter future
Today’s solar roofing shingles from Spartan StormShield are mini marvels designed to look aesthetically pleasing while producing power. Here’s why now is the time to have them installed.

Spartan StormShield is one of a handful of contractors in Ohio authorized to install solar shingles. If you’ve ever thought of solar energy for your home, now’s the time before the federal tax credit for solar ends.
If you’re thinking about a new roof, now or in the next year or two, a 30% federal tax credit on solar shingles is an irresistible enticement to pull the trigger and slash electricity bills. The credit ends December 31, 2025.
I caught up with Jarod Arlia, co-owner of Spartan StormShield, to find out more about these new solar shingles that effectively turn sunshine into clean, renewable energy. They are an exciting breakthrough alternative to traditional solar panels.
Award-Winning Innovation, Design
“One of the big problems with solar panels is they have to be bolted into the deck wood of the roof structure, so it is challenging to mitigate moisture,” says Jarod. “In the past, companies that offered solar panels were often fly-by-night and they didn’t do a good installation job. They would come into a region, sell and install panels, and then go out of business, leaving homeowners with bulky panels that often leaked. GAF on the other hand is a multibillion-dollar, industry-leading roofing materials manufacturer we’ve put our faith in for decades. When GAF chose us to be a master contractor for the first nailable solar shingles to hit the market, we were thrilled.”
Spartan StormShield underwent training and certification through GAF to install the award-winning shingles. They attach to the roof just like a regular shingle does and generate power directly from the roof, creating a low profile for better aesthetics. Each installation includes the mounting of a GAF energy-monitoring portal to see your exact savings.
These energy shingles are always black, but can be paired with a large variety of Timberline Shingles to integrate seamlessly with the look of your roof.
“GAF’s Timberline Solar Shingles collect a power output of 57 watts per shingle,” says Jarod. “Our rep can do an analysis to pinpoint how much energy your roof can produce based on its dynamics, which helps in the decision-making. And homes that may generate surplus power can send it back into the grid and receive a credit. There are no downsides to these maintenance-free shingles.”

Power Demand to Triple
Jarod says these innovative shingles are becoming more and more popular with his customers.
“Once homeowners see a neighbor who is reducing energy costs, they want solar shingles, too,” he says. “This is coming at the ideal time. Solar shingles are poised for explosive growth in the marketplace due to the rising cost of and demand for power, which is expected to triple by 2030.”
As the window on the 30% federal tax credit closes at year’s end, he says they are doing many consultations to let clients know how much they can save.
“Spartan StormShield is one of a handful of contractors in Ohio authorized to install solar shingles,” says Jarod, who notes they can install roofs through November or December, depending on the weather. “If you’ve ever thought of solar energy for your home, now’s the time. We don’t see future state or federal tax credits like this coming back anytime soon.”
