Around 51 million Americans suffer from some form of vision loss. Whether you or someone you know has begun to have trouble reading or are blind, at Magnifiers & More, we offer the latest technology to help with everything from reading to watching television and completing everyday tasks. We also take the time to consult with people to identify the best devices to fit their unique needs.

If there’s someone in your life with visual impairment, here are some “eye-deal” tips for interacting with them:

• Understand the nuances of vision impairment. Most people who are visually impaired still have some sight left. Only 1% of the population is totally blind.

• Don’t talk louder. Many people make the mistake of thinking that because someone is blind, they’re also deaf.

• Give specific directional information. Instead of saying “look at that” or “over here,” be more descriptive, say “look to your left.”

• Contrasting colors improve readability, such as black and white, black and yellow, and blue and yellow. Avoid the color red as it can be a difficult color for the visually impaired to see.

• Large-print items such as remote controls, watches, address books, calendars, books and pill boxes make it easier for the visually impaired to stay independent. Our biggest-selling gifts for the holidays are large-print calendars.

• Consider adding accessibility apps to a smartphone to make using it easier. People with impaired vision don’t necessarily have to stop doing the things they love.
