Smarter homes

Ryan Streb, General Manager • August 11, 2025

Streb Electric can retrofit your home to include the latest money-saving technology.

One of the most popular devices is the capability to program, monitor and direct your home’s lights remotely, so you have the power to turn on lights when you’re on the way home to avoid walking into a dark house, or turn them down when you’re getting ready for bed, change color, etc.

Could your home be smarter?

Over the past few years, the number of customers asking this question has increased dramatically, and manufacturers have upped their game to answer the call. It seems as though more and more functions are Wi-Fi-friendly and smartphone controllable.

One of the most popular devices is the capability to program, monitor and direct your home’s lights remotely, so you have the power to turn on lights when you’re on the way home to avoid walking into a dark house, or turn them down when you’re getting ready for bed, change color, etc. There have been advancements in dimmer switches, which can save money while providing a nicer environment by creating lower-level warm light, especially for sensitive eyes.

Voice command-enabled devices are being introduced all the time, and it seems smart appliances are getting smarter than ever. For instance, a refrigerator that alerts you when you’re out of milk.

Another interesting function we’ve installed for a few clients is the ability to monitor the power usage throughout your home, to see where the actual amperage is being drawn from. Oftentimes the results are surprising and lead to people being able to save on their electric bills.

Security systems have become much more sophisticated, too, with features such as facial recognition, advanced motion detection and integration with emergency services.

We’ve been in business for 50 years and three generations and we’ve seen a lot in terms of innovation. Staying current with technological advancements is a natural for us. Give us a call to do an audit on your home and discover opportunities to make it function smarter.
