The attack of the algae!

Mimi Vanderhaven • June 10, 2025

The long, cloudy, wet spring has created an explosion of algae on area homes. Here’s how Pristine Clean can remove it—professionally and affordably.

We’ve never seen as much algae as we’re seeing this year. It’s everywhere.

We’ve never seen as much algae as we’re seeing this year. It’s everywhere.

It’s been a long, rainy spring, the kind that makes you consider building an ark. Although we’ve been disappointed by the relentless clouds, algae has loved it, thriving on its two favorite conditions—dampness and shade.

“We’ve never seen as much algae as we’re seeing this year,” says Ken Wilson, founder of Pristine Clean, Northeast Ohio’s largest and highest-rated locally owned power washing company. “It’s everywhere, and it’s been a record-breaking year for us so far. Homeowners are scheduling outdoor summer parties, and they just don’t want to look at the algae, mildew and grime on the sides of their homes.”

Unlike amateur power washers who rely on high pressure to clean homes, Pristine employs a three-step process that kills algae and mildew and leaves your home sparkling—without damaging it.

The Three Steps

Pristine’s technicians begin with the application of an algaecide. “We begin with a safe and effective algaecide that softens the mold, mildew, algae and grime before we turn on the machines,” Ken explains. “This allows us to perform a ‘soft wash’ that cleans your home without the dangers of pressure that is too high.”

Next comes the actual power washing. “We use modern, leading-edge equipment to get the job done right,” Ken says. “Each year during the offseason, we purchase additional new equipment and trucks and ensure our technicians are well-trained on the newest technology. This makes each project better, safer and more efficient.”

Third is the application of a sealant. “Sealing your siding is an important final step in the process,” Ken adds. “We apply a surface protectant that acts as a barrier on your home to help it look and stay cleaner longer. It also protects your siding from UV radiation that can cause fading.”

Professional and Affordable

Pristine’s techs undergo both classroom and in-the-field training, including a comprehensive apprenticeship program. “In untrained hands, a power washer can cause damage to people, property and landscaping,” Ken says. “So proper training is a big part of our company culture.”

Fair pricing is also a part of the culture. Unlike less reputable companies, Pristine doesn’t jack up the price in order to discount it. “We’ve always offered a flat-rate, up-front quote based on the square footage of the job, so you pay what your neighbors pay,” Ken assures.

So it’s no surprise the company has more than 1,100 Google reviews with a virtually perfect 4.9-star rating.

Headquartered in Berea, Pristine Clean beautifies homes throughout Northeast Ohio. It is highly rated on Google, Facebook, and HomeAdvisor, and rated A+ by the Better Business Bureau.
