Planning beyond the dollars

Margaret T. Karl, Estate Planning Attorney • October 9, 2026

Dogs, cats and especially long-living pets like parrots often outlive their owners. Who’ll care for them?

A pair of hands holds a white, open-top container filled with vibrant orange and purple flower buds.

When most people think about estate planning, they consider the major things: the house, bank accounts and investments.

But what about your four-legged friends?

As an estate planning attorney for more than 20 years, I’ve learned some of the things that matter most to families don’t necessarily come with the biggest price tags. That’s why a solid estate plan should look beyond the dollars.

Pets are good examples. Dogs, cats and especially long-living pets like parrots often outlive their owners. Who’ll care for them? You can make arrangements for your pet, setting aside funds for his or her care, or designating a no-kill rescue shelter.

Another invaluable consideration is your digital life. Think about how much of it exists behind a password—online banking, emails, social media, cryptocurrency, subscription accounts, Apple IDs and other complex digital assets. Your family needs to know what exists and how the accounts should be accessed and managed. Otherwise, something could be overlooked, unused or can become vulnerable.

Also, don’t underestimate the emotional value of your belongings. I’ve seen families torn apart over items that have only sentimental value. Grandma’s china. Dad’s tools. A childhood baseball glove.

Estate planning isn’t only about protecting wealth. It’s about making life easier for the people you leave behind. Give me a call. I can help start the process.
