Stewards of the land, Sherman & Sons Lawn Care honors efficiency, sustainability and beauty.

A stack of books sits on a wooden table, next to a lit candle and a warm cup of coffee or tea.

Sherman & Sons Lawn Care can take a project from concept to design through to the finished product.

Alex Sherman, owner of Sherman & Sons Lawn Care, likes to say, “If you’re looking for services for the outside of your home or business, we can handle it. If we can’t, we’ll find you the best resource who can.”

Now those are the words of an honest business owner, one who isn’t afraid of hard work and relies on his own skills and those of his employees to guarantee his customers the highest-quality job.

That’s who Alex Sherman is, and he’s been that way since he was a child. But to get the whole story, we have to go back to the beginning. Way back.

“My father Dale raised my brother Taylor and me working as an auto mechanic,” says Alex. “He had a lot of physical issues with carpal tunnel and had eight surgeries over six years. Dealing with some other health problems, he needed to make a change. He started working at odd jobs and cutting grass with a friend. This is how it all started.”

Dale eventually found himself on his own with a few lawn jobs and enlisted the help of his two young sons. They were 8 and 10 years old.

“My dad was struggling and I told him, ‘We’ll do everything you can’t do,’” says Alex. “We mowed, mulched and did a lot of work my dad couldn’t do anymore. Then we’d go door to door with flyers to try and get more jobs. Who could say no to an 8- and 10-year-old?”

That was the start of Sherman & Sons Lawn Care. Years later, Alex and Taylor wanted to build the business, so they went to college. Alex got a degree in Landscape Construction and Design and Taylor in Landscape Management. After Taylor moved on, Alex took over the business and, today, offers complete lawn care, design services and more.

“My father has had continuing health issues and my brother moved on to other things, so I’ve taken the lead role as head of operations and have a great team of people working with me,” Alex says. “Our philosophy for this business is guided by the belief that we are stewards of the land, and we take pride in restoring properties and making them efficient, sustainable and beautiful.”

Alex takes particular delight in taking a bare piece of land or patch of dirt and creating something beautiful for families to enjoy.

“I love designing patios and backyard areas,” says Alex. “I’ll take a project from concept to design through to the finished product. We specialize in helping people stay within a budget by planning projects out into the future. Not everything has to be done right now, but we can plan for it now and that saves you money today and down the road.”

Alex says keeping clients comfortable and on budget is very important to him. He has no interest in overselling.

“We’ll do things like lay pipes or rough in plumbing now for a future project, so we don’t have to dig again later,” says Alex. “That way you’re prepared without having the expense of doing things twice whether we do it or not.”

In many ways, Alex is still that little boy helping out his dad—building a business one client at a time.
