Chill out

With the phase-out of older air conditioning units, now might be a perfect time to call S&S Heating, Cooling & Sheet Metal for service or an upgrade.

A stack of books sits on a wooden table, next to a lit candle and a warm cup of coffee or tea.

=No need to suffer the heat. S&S Heating, Cooling & Sheet Metal has you covered so you’ll be cool and comfortable this summer.

For nearly four decades, S&S Heating, Cooling & Sheet Metal has been helping families stay cool and comfortable through every kind of summer, adapting along the way as air conditioning technology continues to evolve.

“Just like most technology nowadays, air conditioners are getting smarter—giving homeowners more control, improved comfort and meaningful energy savings during the hottest months of the year,” says Mark Staron II.

Founded in 1989 by his parents, Mark Sr. and Gayle, the company has built its reputation on high-efficiency products designed to reduce energy consumption and lower utility bills.

Cooler Homes, Smarter Systems

This local company continues to stay ahead of the curve by embracing the latest HVAC innovations.

New inverter air conditioners adjust compressor speed based on real-time cooling demands, providing more consistent temperatures. Smart thermostats allow homeowners to control their systems from smartphones or computers—whether they’re at work, away on vacation or at home. Advanced diagnostics can even alert HVAC professionals to potential issues early, helping prevent unexpected breakdowns.

At the same time, the HVAC industry is navigating an important transition. As the Environmental Protection Agency implements new Global Warming Potential (GWP) limits, manufacturers have phased out production of new systems using R-410A refrigerant. In their place are next-generation, more environmentally friendly alternatives that use R-454B refrigerant, which is designed to reduce GWP by roughly 75%.

“Although manufacturers are no longer producing new R-410A systems, we can still service existing units at least until 2030,” Mark explains. “For those considering an upgrade, now is a great time to explore new options. Many customers are finding it makes more financial sense to invest in a new unit rather than pay the rising cost per pound of the older refrigerant.”

An Ounce of Prevention

With proper maintenance, an air conditioner can last about 15 years on average. That’s why S&S Heating, Cooling & Sheet Metal recommends homeowners schedule a tune-up every summer.

“Think of an annual cooling tune-up as if it were an oil change for your home,” says Mark, noting the company has a dedicated staff of tune-up technicians and all technicians are certified by North American Technician Excellence. “You wouldn’t skip one for your car and expect it to run properly. Your air conditioner is no different.”

According to Mark, one of the most common reasons an air conditioner fails is something simple: a dirty filter.

“When filters aren’t changed regularly, airflow is restricted, which puts unnecessary strain on both the compressor and blower motor,” he says.

Homeowners should also be careful with landscaping. While it’s tempting to disguise an outdoor unit, Mark recommends keeping at least 3 feet of clear space around it to prevent debris from being pulled into the coils.

The S&S Precision Tune-Up is a thorough, two-hour service with a 30-plus-item checklist. A technician tunes, cleans, lubricates and makes any necessary adjustments to keep the units running at peak efficiency.

“We do more than most companies during the tune-up,” Mark says. “We even include a no-rinse evaporator foam cleaner with a fresh lemon scent. It smells great, but more importantly it helps improve efficiency and reduces stress on the system’s motor.”

It’s these little details and extra care that have earned the company five-star Google reviews.

“S&S has done the maintenance on my boiler for years and recently installed a whole-house air conditioner in my older house,” wrote customer Michael McMahon in a recent review. “They are professional, courteous, responsible, reliable and reasonably priced. Their routine maintenance is exceptional, and their installation work was as well.”

As a Trane Comfort Specialist, S&S Heating, Cooling & Sheet Metal also helps customers better budget for home expenses with its Preferred Customer Maintenance Program.

“We have been offering this program as a customer service benefit, but now it is more important than ever to find ways to save money,” Mark says. “Customers can save money by extending equipment life, preventing costly repairs and ensuring equipment is operating safely.”

With more than 500 maintenance plan customers, the program has become a trusted way for local homeowners to protect their investments—and their comfort.

“We’re incredibly grateful for the trust families and businesses place in us,” Mark says. “Many of our customers have been with us for decades, and that’s something we never take for granted.
