The 100th home

Lake-Geauga Habitat for Humanity (LGHFH) relies on the power of community to offer deserving families a place to call home, while providing additional benefits and opportunities that reach well beyond four walls. LGHFH is proud to welcome its 100th family to its new home which may be completed closer to October. 

“Our 100th Home and Beyond initiative was created a few years ago to raise necessary funds to complete our 100th home,” says Chad Collins, executive director of LGHFH. “Together with the strong community partnerships formed through this initiative, the hundreds of volunteers and additional support, we hope to continue providing homes for families well into the future.”

The 100th home is a single-story, 1,400- square-foot home located on a quiet street in Eastlake, with a two-car garage and large backyard just waiting to welcome home its owners. 

The LGHFH application process includes three basic requirements for homeownership. Applicants must demonstrate the need for stable housing, prove the ability to pay the mortgage, and be willing to partner with the LGHFH on the project.

“This is a long and involved process for applicants,” says Chad. “Once chosen, the family pledges to work right alongside volunteers. The addition of this new home offers so much for the family, of course, but also the entire neighborhood.”

The goal at LGHFH has always been to provide safe, affordable housing, one home at a time, through the help of volunteers as well as in-kind donations like roofing, siding, or labor donated for electrical installation, etc. 

“Everything we do at LGHFH is volunteer driven,” says Noelle Kuson, volunteer coordinator and marketing manager. “No experience is necessary for volunteers. Whether it’s on a home-build site or in ReStore, our non-profit home improvement store and donation center, it’s an example of what community support and collaboration can accomplish.”

Noelle says that often people are hesitant to volunteer because they don’t have building skills or retail experience. Be assured, everyone has something to offer and LGHFH appreciates and encourages your interest and involvement. 

LGHFH will dedicate its 100th home in Eastlake coming up in October and encourages community members to follow along on the website for information and ways to become involved in the continuing mission to support deserving families in Lake County.

“Whether it’s financial donations, in-kind business partners offering products and services, or anyone over the age of 18, or younger with adult supervision, we welcome and rely on this community and beyond to help us complete our mission,” says Kate Burke, development director. “We have seen firsthand how a family living in a stable community will thrive. Parents are relieved of the stress of unreliable housing, children do better in school, and families can look forward to a stronger future. It’s a win for the entire community.”
