Staying on top of evolving trends and technology in home design can be overwhelming. Throughout the coming year, we’ll check in with the savvy experts at Guhde Flooring America to help you imagine and create your dream space.

This month we caught up with Sales Manager Shawn Rosa, who has a remarkable passion for tile and grout.

Q: How has the technology of grout changed over the years?
A:
When customers tell me they love the look of tile but don’t want it in their homes, the reason why is usually the grout. Over time it can stain. So when new types of urethane and acrylic grouts were introduced several years ago, we were thrilled.

Compared to traditional cement-based grout, these new power grouts are stain-resistant and mold and mildew resistant, making them ideal for kitchens and bathrooms. Acrylic and urethane grouts are more flexible than the traditional style, which makes them more durable.

The new formulas are pre-mixed, so you just use the product straight from the container. Because the sealer is mixed into the formula, you don’t have to seal the grout after installing it. Although the new grouts are more expensive, they pay for themselves in the long run.

Q: What are the latest trends in grout colors?
A:
Today you can select from any imaginable color. Whether you want it to stand out or blend in, grout is a vital part of the design. It’s best to sit down with the tile and other elements in the room to see how everything looks together.
