Is there ever a good time for your home’s air conditioning or heat to fail? It usually happens when you need it the most. That’s Murphy’s Law, right? And that’s why the HVAC experts at P.K. Wadsworth have one word of advice when it comes to avoiding it: maintenance.

“Ignorance is bliss when it comes to your HVAC system,” general manager Tyler Wadsworth, says. “Our busiest times are when the weather first turns hot or cold and everyone is firing up the AC, or the heat that hasn’t been turned on in months.”

Tyler explains that systems tend to break down seasonally. We all do it, right? We wait until it gets uncomfortable before we turn on the AC or heat. Tyler says it’s those extended run times that strain the system and cause failures.

“That first heatwave or freeze puts a lot of demand on a system that may have been showing signs of stress last year that weren’t addressed,” Tyler says. “When you turn it on months later and expect it to cool or heat your home, you could face an unexpected whole system replacement that may have been avoided with proper maintenance.”

P.K. Wadsworth recommends a full maintenance check on your HVAC system twice each year. Tyler explains that the furnace and AC are both part of the same system and use the same filters and blower, so there’s year-round wear and tear. Just because it’s blowing cold or hot air doesn’t mean all is well.

“A simple condenser coil cleaning can relieve pressure on the system,” Tyler says. “The components don’t have to work as hard to heat and cool your home and will last longer.”

When system replacement is necessary, a P.K. Wadsworth comfort consultant can be your best friend when it comes to helping you understand your HVAC system and guide you through the process.

When system replacement is necessary, a P.K. Wadsworth comfort consultant can be your best friend when it comes to helping you understand your HVAC system and guide you through the process.

“Our comfort consultants are specially trained to handle replacement questions,” Tyler says. “Technicians handle maintenance and repair issues and a comfort consultant guides you through a replacement process and recommends the right system for your home.”

As a fourth-generation company started by Tyler’s great-grandfather, P.K. Wadsworth has expanded the services it provides over the years and has also passed on the vast knowledge the team has gained over lifetimes in this industry.

“Many of our employees have been with us for 20-plus years, and we share all that experience,” Tyler says. “As a company, we understand the needs of your home, whether it’s brand new or more than a hundred years old. There’s a lot of great HVAC technology available today, but that doesn’t mean your home needs or can even handle it. The duct work of a 1920s home, for example, was not built with cooling in mind. Our comfort consultants advise the proper system and solutions for your home, and more expensive isn’t always better or even appropriate. Anything is possible, but understanding the nuances of each home is very important.”

If a system replacement is necessary, Tyler recommends having a comfort consultant advise you sooner rather than later.

“The industry is still experiencing some pandemic-related delays, so if you think you might be facing a system replacement, give us a call,” Tyler says. “There’s no avoiding the heat or the cold in Cleveland. We’ll make sure your home is ready.”
