Search Engines like Google and Yahoo! have bots that crawl and gather information on the internet to build an index. From there, the information is fed through an algorithm which then yields the most relevant results. Confused, yet?
Think of Search Engines as librarians with a library (the internet) that houses all the books (websites) in the world. A patron (web user) will ask the librarian for a book on Geranium Care and the librarian will provide a list of books (websites) that are relevant. But how?
What you don’t know is the librarian has billions of staff members (bots) that continuously search and retrieve the latest and greatest books (again websites) to match your inquiry. So, how do you persuade the librarian into recommending your book over your competitor’s? SEO.
What is SEO?
SEO, or Search Engine Optimization, is the practice of increasing the traffic to your website through organic search results (not paid advertising).
Here are some tips to increase your search engine rank:
- Upload great content: Search engines love content. By uploading great photos, copy and video to your website, you will increase your search engine ranking.
- Update your site frequently: We are constantly looking for the latest and greatest and search engines know this. That is why search engines like updated content. By updating calendars, and pushing monthly blogs, you’ll ultimately drive traffic to your website.
- Local search: By listing your website on dozens of trusted directories, search engines like Google recognizes your site as credible, which helps your search engine ranking. Added bonus– Search engines are also starting to favorably rank “the best of” or “top 10 lists” pages from directories such as TripAdvisor and Yelp.
