All the time and careful consideration you put into selecting the perfect new flooring for your room could be compromised if it isn’t properly installed, cautions Christie Jackson, sales manager at MDG Flooring America, in Medina.

“Proper installation is essential both for appearance and for reducing the possibility of problems popping up in the future,” Christie explains.

Below, Christie shares more about quality flooring installation.

Q: What are the pitfalls of improper installation?
A: Improper floor preparation can ruin the project. You need to be careful about keeping the floor level to within the three-sixteenths of an inch industry standard for peaks and low spots. With carpeting, you need also to be careful about centering the patterns and matching them up between two sheets of carpet, as well as the proper placement of seams. With ceramic tile, proper spacing and seam placement can be tricky if you’re not experienced with it, and in showers, proper waterproofing is obviously very important.

Q: Can flooring be a do-it-yourself job?
A: Some confident people might install their own flooring. But as many times as I’ve seen it done, if I tried it, I’m not sure it would come out the way I would want it to.

Q: What can MDG Flooring to do help ensure a quality installation?
A: Our installers are trained professionals with many years of experience, and they only work for us. Some have been with us since we opened the store and they’ve seen just about everything.
