No yeast? Fugetaboutit.

By Felicia Vargo, The Starving Chef

No yeast? No problem.

These bagels require no rise or boil, just mix, rest and bake and you’re on your way to fresh, homemade bagels.

Your house will smell like a bakery the entire time, too, and I say that’s an absolute plus.

DIY Bagels

Prep time: 60 minutes
Cook time: 30 minutes
Makes: 8 bagels

Ingredients

For the Bagels:
3 ¼ C flour
¼ C flour + more as needed, for dusting
1 T baking powder
1 ½ C plain Greek yogurt
½ T sea salt
1 egg
1 T water
¼ C warm water, as needed

For Everything Bagel Topping:
¼ C old fashioned oats
1 T dried garlic
1 T dried onion
1 T sesame seeds
1 T poppy seeds
1 t sea salt

Here’s How
  1. In a large bowl, stir together the flour, baking powder, Greek yogurt and sea salt until a thick, sticky dough forms. Add the warm water as needed to form dough.
  2. Dust a flat surface with the remaining flour. Turn out the dough and begin to knead, adding more flour as needed for dusting. Knead for about 10 minutes, until a smooth and elastic dough forms. Cover and rest for one hour at room temperature.
  3. Preheat the oven to 375 F. Cut the dough into eight, even-sized dough balls. Using your thumb, press through the center of each ball and work the dough into a ring shape.
  4. Arrange the bagels on a baking sheet lined with parchment or a silicone mat. In a small bowl, whisk together the water and egg. Brush each bagel with the egg wash so that the top and sides are covered.
  5. In another bowl, combine the ingredients for the everything bagel topping. Sprinkle over the tops of each bagel, as desired.
  6. Bake the bagels for 30-40 minutes, until golden brown and puffed up. Let cool completely before slicing. Spread on your favorite cream cheese or add your favorite sandwich ingredients. Enjoy!
