When an unexpected bone or musculoskeletal injury occurs, your first instinct may be to drive to the nearest emergency room. But there may be a better option.

University Hospitals Geauga Medical Center’s new Orthopedic Injury Center may not only be more convenient and cost less than the ER, but it also provides world-class treatment of bone related conditions, promises Benjamin Silver, MD, an orthopedic surgeon at UH Geauga Medical Center.

“All of the surgeons in our Orthopedic Group are fellowship trained and do the most complex surgeries in our fields,” Dr. Silver says. “It’s very unique to be able to offer that high level of care to patients in a rural setting.”

The Orthopedic Injury Clinic, located on UH Geauga Medical Center campus in Chardon, opened in January. Another Orthopedic Medical Clinic also recently opened at University Hospitals Ahuja Medical Center, in Beachwood.

“We wanted to provide a better solution for patients who have suffered a traumatic injury, like a possible bone break, or who have been suffering through chronic pain that doesn’t seem to go away,” Dr. Silver says. “You can see us during business hours to get an expert opinion about what needs to be done. If it turns out that emergency treatment is necessary, we can send you over, but in many cases, we’re able to avoid the long delays you might encounter in the ER.”

Patients in need of orthopedic care can walk into the clinic or call for a same-day or next-day appointment.

Among the injuries treated at the clinic are:

  • ACL tears
  • Dislocations and joint injuries
  • Fractures
  • Sprains and strains
  • Tendon and ligament injuries
  • Knee and back pain

“Since the clinic opened, we have been very successful at helping patients get in and get definitive answers to their problem as quickly as possible,” Dr. Silver says.

Specialists who see patients at the clinic include:

  • Benjamin Silver, MD, who specializes in hip and knee replacements
  • John Martin Leland, MD, who specializes in sports medicine and shoulder surgery
  • Zachary Gordon, MD, who specializes in spine surgery
  • Jonathan Macknin, MD, who specializes in surgery of the hand and upper extremities
  • Jocelyn Kinkade, PA-C ATC, Orthopedic Physician Assistant, also sees patients at the clinic

“We are all available for general complaints, and we take care of very complex issues within our various specialties,” Dr. Silver says.

“Our goal is to get our patients back to their level of function and the quality of life that they desire. Whenever possible, we try to treat injuries using non-surgical methods, like medication, injections, physical therapy and bracing.”

The Orthopedic Injury Clinic is staffed Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m.–4:00 p.m. You can make an appointment by calling 440-901-0899, or you can walk in at 13207 Ravenna Road, in Chardon.
