With the explosive growth in the salt therapy market, Vivify Wellness at Avenues owner Lisa M. Borchert, M.A. Ed., LPCC, explains what a real salt treatment is and why she built a salt therapy room.

“Our room features a glowing wall of salt blocks, and those are for décor purposes,” she explains. “What makes a salt room therapeutic is the halogenerator, a machine that grinds pharmaceutical-grade Himalayan salt and pushes it into the room in the form of a fine mist. During a therapy session, people relaxing on comfy lounges breath in the microparticles.”

The science behind salt therapy is that the substance produces negative ions, which neutralize free radicals.

Since salt is naturally anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial, it acts as a sponge to the respiratory track, thinning mucus, pollutants and allergens. After one treatment, you will breathe easier. After several treatments, your immune system gets a boost and you’ll sleep better.

“Without a halogenerator, you won’t realize any of these benefits,” says Lisa. “Salt lamps by themselves will not produce the necessary chemical reaction to release the negative ions.”

She cites a study by Columbia University Medical Center that stated it would take 100 years of a salt lamp being heated by a 15-watt lightbulb to produce this reaction.

In addition to salt therapy, Vivify offers a host of wellness treatments and services including yoga, Urban Zen yoga, infrared sauna, nutritional counseling, acupuncture, massage therapy, reiki and NeurOptimal Neurofeedback.
