When Brunswick native Renee Sherry Velasquez and her husband, Albert, started to invest in property, she didn’t expect to leave her corporate job to become a full-time real estate agent. Today, the owner of The RSVP Group at eXp Realty invites home hunters to enjoy a moving “eXperience.”

Before becoming an investor, Renee’s real estate experience was largely confined to the kitchen. As an account executive for a granite company, she worked 60-hour weeks, training employees at home improvement retailers and other accounts throughout Northeast Ohio while raising a young son. At the time, Albert was stationed at the U.S. Naval Base in Guam serving as an explosive ordnance disposal technician—disarming bombs.

Although she says she has a passion for listing houses, Renee Velasquez says she also loves working with buyers to find their perfect new home.

“Investing in real estate was our retirement plan,” Renee confides. “I purchased three homes in a short period of time before I even thought about becoming a real estate agent. Since then we’ve flipped homes and accumulated rental properties.”

Her experience as an investor, Renee says, helps her to understand the challenges and pitfalls that a home buyer or seller might encounter.

“The cool thing about coming from an investor background is that I have been on all sides of the transaction,” she says. “I have been a buyer and I have been a seller many, many times over. I know the struggles you can go through—the highs and the lows and how truly life impacting it is to buy and sell a house. I have empathy for the people who are going through that experience.”

After earning her real estate license in 2008, Renee formed her own sales group in 2015—originally affiliated with one of the nation’s largest real estate companies. One of her first challenges was finding a name.

Even without including her maiden name—Sherry—“Renee Velasquez” was a lot of letters to squeeze across a sign, she realized. So, she adopted her inviting initials—adding “P” for “Properties”—as the name of her business.

Although she says she has a passion for listing houses, Renee says she also loves working with buyers to find their perfect new home.
