Premium vs. Commission: It’s no contest

Can you negotiate your insurance agent’s commission?

By Seth Zaremba, Zinc Insurance

How exactly do insurance agents make money? The answer is simple: commission.

So is commission part of the price you pay? A number of factors determine cost, but your agent’s commission isn’t one of them. Keep in mind, when you shop for a lower rate, you’ll get a different quality coverage.

Pay attention to how a less expensive policy differs. If it omits protection you need, you’re just paying less for less. I’d suggest that value is the most important feature of any policy. What will you get out of it in a claim?

As in any professional, service-based relationship, expertise is valuable. Commission acknowledges that value.

We offer years of experience working with insurance companies and a deep knowledge of their products. So, our agents can help to negotiate a balance between good price and great value. We take pride in that specialized service.

In the end, commission is part of a process that’s focused on value. When everyone benefits—insurance company, agency and you—we’re all happy. That’s how we like to do business.

If you’d like to have an intelligent conversation about the role commission plays in getting expert-level service, I invite you to give us a call.
