As John Tamer readies to celebrate 30 years in business in 2018, he says no matter how big or small the remodeling job, he still feels the pride of satisfaction at the end.

“I founded Tamer Construction calling on my own background as a tradesman, honoring the highest level of craftsmanship, and surrounded myself with seasoned craftsmen with decades of experience in the business,” he says.

“Everyone who works for me shares a vision of delivering the highest level of professionalism, while streamlining the process to make it enjoyable for the client.”

Designing and building kitchens, bathrooms, basements, in-law suites and home additions are specialties of Tamer.

To provide a place for clients to explore an eclectic variety of model kitchens, baths, bars and even a dream shower, John opened Cabinets and Designs of Ohio in Broadview Heights.

The showroom’s focus is on full-service kitchen and bath remodeling as well as retail and wholesale cabinetry sales for do-it-yourselfers or other remodeling contractors looking for the best quality, American-made cabinetry and design services.

Dramatic Before-and-Afters
“We have done many kitchen remodels in the towns of Bay Village, Rocky River and Lakewood,” says John.

“I believe we have a knack for doing what needs to be done—whether it’s reconfiguring the space, tearing down walls or building additions—to retain the charm and character of an older home, while adding all of the modern amenities families want.”

He says their designers on staff takes customers through the design process via three-dimensional CAD, so they can see how their selections will look before decisions are made and the work begins.
For Kathy & Steve C., of Rocky River, a kitchen renovation changed the way they live and entertain. “John was by far the most responsive person we have ever worked with. His crew had amazing attention to detail and addressed every small question we had during the process.”

A neighbor of theirs, Gareth V., needed an addition and kitchen renovation. He says, “They were professional, on time and the work was of the highest quality. John was always available for questions and to help in the decision-making process.”

For Christine H. from Bay Village, gutting and remodeling two bathrooms was tops on her dream list. She says Tamer was recommended to her by someone in the construction business, which says a lot.

“They completely remodeled two bathrooms, helping me with the choice of materials and fixtures, making the whole process as easy as possible. The crew was hardworking and always cleaned up. I still smile when I go in to take a shower,” she says.

What’s Trending in Design?
John attends national home construction shows and likes to stay ahead of home design trends.

Heading into winter, he reports the dominant color still is gray.

Painted cabinetry is more popular than stained, with white, creams and pale grays the top selections. People are opting for a pop of color on the island, too.

“We can match any Sherwin Williams or Benjamin Moore color, so the sky’s the limit to getting exactly the shade you want,” he says.

To fit any budget, they carry three lines of American-made cabinetry, with varying levels from semi-custom to custom-built.

“For flooring, hardwoods are big now, but luxury ceramic or vinyl tiles that mimic hardwoods are gaining popularity because of their durability and resistance to moisture,” says John.

“With square tiles, people are going bigger, no matter what size the room, and 24-inch tiles are becoming the norm.”

For countertops, more and more people are opting for quartz, as well as granite.

“And in dream kitchens, a trending must-have component is the microwave drawer,” he says. “People love the convenience and versatility of having their microwave built into the base of their cabinets.”

Designing to Suit
As one of a handful of builders in the area certified in the growing field of Universal Design, John is adept at making sure every space in a home can be used by every member of the home, regardless of age or ability.

“With the aging population, we’re getting more demand for things like wider doorways, roll-in showers and variable heights in countertops,” he says. “There is an art to making all of that flow.”
