With investment account statements showing losses this year, many people are questioning whether they have the proper mix of investments in those accounts to match their tolerance for loss.

Since 2009, the stock market has experienced mostly positive results with minimal price fluctuation. More recently it seems that that price fluctuation has returned to its historical norms. Since 1900, the Dow Jones Industrial Average has experienced a loss of five percent or more about three times per year on average. The average length of time from market high to market low has been 46 days. Losses of 10 percent or more have occurred about once a year on average and lasted about 115 days. Losses of 15 percent or more have occurred about every two years and lasted about 216 days. And losses of 20 percent or more have occurred about every 3.75 years and lasted about 338 days.

While past results are not predictive of future results, each downturn has been followed by a recovery and a new market high. That’s a lot of price fluctuation and you need to be prepared to ride out those fluctuations and find a mix of investments that makes you comfortable in all market conditions.
