Research is pointing to a bevy of positive effects produced by taking saunas, from lowering blood pressure to improving skin conditions and the immune system.

Vivify Wellness at Avenues owner Lisa M. Borchert, M.A. Ed., LPCC, researched the industry and chose to bring in an infrared sauna. Infrared uses infrared waves to increase the body’s temperature from the inside out, while a traditional sauna heats the air around the body.

“Our infrared sauna produces a deeper cellular sweat that revs up the metabolism and increases blood flow, which affects many other systems in your body,” she says.

Recent studies also have unveiled a connection between the digestive system and skin conditions, showing how saunas can help everything from irritable bowel syndrome to acid reflux

According to Dr. Mark Hyman, director of Cleveland Clinic’s Center for Functional Medicine, some diseases that seem totally unrelated to the gut, such as eczema and psoriasis, are actually affected by gut imbalances.

Lisa reports that many of her patients have experienced relief of these symptoms with regular infrared sauna visits.

“Sweating is the body’s natural detox mechanism,” she adds. “It kicks the kidneys and liver, which are filtering organs, into high gear.”

In addition to an infrared sauna, Vivify offers a host of wellness treatments and services, including a salt room, yoga, nutritional counseling, acupuncture, reiki and NeurOptimal neurofeedback.
