Helen J. and her husband, Jack, moved to Beachwood Commons Assisted Living on February 15 of this year. Helen remembers because it was the day after they celebrated Valentine’s Day. A few months later, Jack passed away. Helen says she misses her husband of more than 60 years every day, but she is thankful they found Beachwood Commons.

“I was able to devote my time to Jack during those last several months of his life,” says Helen.

“The staff and the nursing care are wonderful. Being here took away the anxiety and the worries we had when we were still in our home. We were able to enjoy our time together, knowing he was being well cared for.”

Beachwood Commons Assisted Living abides by four guiding principles that direct everyday life here. Independence, privacy, dignity and choice are always taken into consideration when caring for each resident. The apartment-style living ensures privacy for residents, and also promotes independence.

“We are here for our residents as much, or as little, as they need us,” says Adrienne Pace, Community Director.

“As physical or mental health declines, needs increase. We come to them in their own apartments to fulfill those needs. Residents aren’t required to move to another area of the building and rarely have to leave our care. It truly is aging in place.”

Each of the 76 apartments at Beachwood Commons, either studio or one-bedroom, come with a kitchenette and full-size refrigerator. Residents bring their own furnishings and mementos to personalize their new home.

“It’s always hard to leave your home, especially when you’ve made so many memories,” says Adrienne. “But we find that residents are often ready to leave the burden of homeownership behind them and bring just what they want and need here. And they always have those memories.”

Lenni P. came to Beachwood Commons from another area assisted living and couldn’t be happier with her decision.

“I couldn’t walk when I came here,” says Lenni. “The therapists here were so encouraging and got me back on my feet. They made me believe I was strong enough to do it, and I did. It’s more than just a job to the staff here.”

When talking with the residents, it was clear that not only are they happy with the staff at Beachwood Commons, they are also happy with each other.

“I have met delightful people here who have become my friends,” says Helen. “This was so helpful when my husband passed away. I didn’t have to start all over again. I was already here and had the support of people who understood what I was going through.”

The residents at Beachwood Commons enjoy their independence, and don’t feel isolated from the lives they led before moving here.

“I continue to go out and see friends once or twice every week,” says Helen. “We go to local coffee shops and chat for hours.”

Residents like to participate in many of the activities offered. From playing cards and trivia games to exercise classes and shopping trips, the residents are very active both here and in the community.

“It’s a social atmosphere,” says Judi H., a resident of several months. “And you can participate if you would like. There’s always something going on. When my children found Beachwood Commons, they said they found a place where they thought I would be happy, and they were right.”
