From weekend warriors to post surgical patients, many people are in need of therapy to get back to daily activities. Jody Heyman, owner of Hands On Rehabilitation in Mayfield Village, is an occupational therapist and certified hand therapist specializing in the treatment of the upper extremities of the body.

“I started my own practice 10 years ago after years of working in hospitals and orthopedic practices,” says Jody.

“After years of advanced study and continuing education, I am certified in hand therapy and specialize in the treatment of conditions affecting the hand, wrist, elbow, shoulder and neck areas. My goal is to return my patients to a productive lifestyle.”

Jody’s patients include arthritis sufferers, people with repetitive use injuries, athletes, those recovering from fractures and post surgical patients. One therapy where Jody has also completed advanced training and certification is the dry needling technique. Dry needling is similar to acupuncture but is based on neuroanatomy and the modern, scientific study of musculoskeletal and neuromuscular systems.

“Dry needling treats not just the trigger points of your pain, but all points leading to the painful area,” explains Jody. “A sterile, fine filament is inserted through the skin, creating a micro lesion in the tissue. This causes a neuromuscular effect that enhances the body’s ability to heal while reducing pain.”

A virtually painless technique, many dry needling patients experience immediate relief of their symptoms. Conditions such as tennis elbow, carpal tunnel, golfers elbow and migraine headaches respond to dry needling. Through her certification through the Dr. Ma Integrative Dry Needling Institute, Jody’s skills in the technique are unique to her practice. As a direct access therapist, Jody does not require a doctor’s prescription for her therapy services.

“I am not affiliated with any one hospital and no doctor referral is necessary,” says Jody.

“My patients receive one-on-one care. I have no other therapists or assistants. Patients start with me and I see them through until we’ve accomplished our goal of improving a patient’s pain-free quality of life.”
