There are different ways to rejuvenate the face, says Dr. Laurel Matthews, a board-certified physician with more than 35 years of practice experience and the owner of Dr. Laurel’s PRP Bar.

“At the lower end of the spectrum you have creams and peels. In the middle you have hyaluronic acid fillers. Between the top and middle levels you have micro-needling, and the most aggressive treatment is laser treatment. What I do is take micro-needling and supercharge it, so you’re getting an extremely high-level result without the financial sacrifice or downtime laser treatment represents.”

Dr. Laurel’s exclusive Vampire Facial involves the use of micro-needling as noted above, something many people are already familiar with.

“But what I offer is the combination of PRP with micro-needling. The addition of PRP significantly amplifies the result,” she says.

PRP is platelet-rich plasma, something found naturally in everyone’s blood. After drawing your blood, Dr. Laurel spins out the platelets, which are then applied to your face and micro-needled in by way of microscopic punctures.

“We isolate the growth factors in the blood and then drive them into the skin to stimulate collagen production. Those growth factors recruit omnipotent stem cells, which rejuvenate skin. New blood vessels grow and the result is new connective tissue strengthened with collagen. Skin becomes tighter, more even, and lines and wrinkles are reduced. Any scarring on the face from acne is diminished. The change can be dramatic.”

“Some of the effects of this procedure can be seen almost immediately, but continued improvement takes up to three months,” she notes. “There is no downtime, just a little redness.”

Dr. Laurel says because PRP is added to the traditional micro-needling procedure, a visit every six months is sufficient unless you’re trying to soften acne scarring. To soften acne scars and eliminate hyperpigmentation, she recommends a series of three Vampire Facial treatments. Most people opt to have the grooves beneath their eyes (tear troughs) treated following their micro-needling procedure.

“A tear trough injection creates soft tissue and elastin to lift and minimize under-eye volume loss,” she explains.
