Winter continues to tease us with warmer temperatures, so we may as well think spring. You might be ready to head outdoors, but is your deck ready for you? Joe Jacobs, owner of Chagrin Home Improvements, in Chagrin Falls, is filling his spring schedule for deck cleanings and restorations.

“We’re filling up fast for spring and summer deck cleanings,” says Joe. “Maintaining your deck is protecting your investment, but it also allows you to enjoy outdoor living in a space that’s attractive and adds value to your home.”

Joe says that neglect is enemy number one of your deck. And the Northeast Ohio weather isn’t doing us any favors. But with proper maintenance you can enjoy it for years—and it’s never too early to start. Chagrin Home Improvements will assess your deck’s condition, make any necessary repairs, then clean and prepare the deck for staining and sealing.

“Even though it’s still cold outside, you can plan for warmer weather by scheduling your deck maintenance now, before the heat sets in,” says Joe. “It’s those freeze and thaw cycles of the winter and then the heat of the summer months that damage the wood. “It’s usually a two-day job, unless the weather doesn’t cooperate,” says Joe. “Often people think their deck is beyond repair and they need to replace it. Only about five percent of the time is that necessary. We can almost always repair it and spare you the cost of replacement.”

The job begins on day one with any minor repairs and a thorough power wash. The deck is then allowed to dry before staining is done on the second trip.

“It’s a very efficient process,” says Joe. “It’s just me and a few crew members doing the work, and I’ve known these guys my whole life. Don’t worry about being home when the work is being done.
